AD ???

I think this thread needs to be deleted, people are starting to level personal insults at potential SMU employees based entirely on rumour, I can't believe you guys haven't been up in arms emailing and calling the webmasters to have the thread removed.

Incidentally, does anyone, have ANY evidence to corroborate this other than the assurances of BigEasyPony (no offense Big Easy, I'm just looking for a few confirmations).

And in the next couple of years you are going to find out that a large number of athletes are in the same major that was created a couple of years ago. Shock of shocks. Wait and see.

it was the part about, 'anyone with a clue knows...'. I would be fine with Hartzell, but I also think Dickson represents an upgrade. You yourself said he hasnt hired alot of guys over the years. That also means he has not made an abundance of bad hires. Clearly a few, but lets not go overboard painting that as his achilles heel.

does SMU have an Exercise Science or Kinesiology Degree because I believe that's where about 40% of the Tulane Football team is in.

No. And it doesn't need one. Not everything must be as you ordain it to be. The old phrase "Rocks for Jocks" didn't mean Kinesiology, either. "clustering" is the operative word, and the absence of it is considered a good thing by the faculty. Nevertheless, there will be more of it the future.

Why can't we bring back the PE department, aren't some of the wellness professors the same people that used to teach in the PE department?

if done properly, there is nothing wrong with have a Kinesiology major. We should have one like every other D-1 program does. Even Rice has one or something close if i am not mistaken.

If I remember correctly their website does list a Kinsesiology department, with outstanding facilities I might add.

Yes, Rice has Kinesiology. For the record, I would be all for it or for Sports Management. I just don't think it is necessary. I believe if we can get the kids in, we can keep them it with the programs we have. The issue for me is getting them in, particluarly IA transfers and JuCos.

A friend of mine that played football for Rice said Kinesiology was actually very hard at Rice. I don't know how many athletes actually take it there, but the impression I got was not that many. I never looked at their roster to find out.

I guess the point I was trying to make is it would be easier for transfers and jucos to get in if we had that kind of athlete-friendly program, since it appears getting them in is a matter of getting their transfer hours accepted. Must've gotton lost in the translation.

The discussion is moot because the Magic 8 Ball said that Tulanes AD will not be SMU's new AD.

That would be a WAS in, because that's one of the things Cowen dismantled after Katrina (that and the full time city college).
Which may explain why Dickson is tired of things.
However, it didn't help us a bit getting transfers or jucos in (we haven't had a juco on the football team in over 10 years; their credits won't transfer and they had to have qualified as a frosh - don't know how your system works).
On the other hand, I think admissions requirements are the real problem at Tulane, especially in a educationally challenged state like La. What you did after the DP, we did after the point shaving - ratcheted them up.
There are some easier degrees - sociology - and with the small classes at the private schools, most of the players should be able to get through.

SMU officials are centering on several candidates for its athletic directors job.

The position becomes vacant on May 31 when Jim Copeland retires.

SMU is looking at Rick Dickson of Tulane, Rick Hartzell from Northern Iowa, Chet Gladchuk from Navy and Gary Barta of Wyoming according to sources.

Tulane officials confirmed Monday that SMU president Gerald Turner spoke with Tulane president Scott Cowen about Dickson.

The two presidents are close friends and served on various NCAA committees.

"We are aware that SMU has spoken to Rick Dickson," Tulane spokesperson Michael Strecker said.

SMU officials were also interested in Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart. But Barnhart said through a spokesperson he wasn’t interested in the position.

Earlier this month, during the Conference USA men’s basketball tournament in Memphis, Turner said he’s pleased with the progress of the search.

"We have a number of people interested," Turner said. "We’re very encouraged by it, and we have some very good candidates. All things being equal, you sort of target a sitting AD."

Turner is also leaning toward finding an athletic director from one of the power conferences.

Tom Barry, the chairman of SMU’s search committee, said he’s not sure when they will meet but was hopeful it would be soon.
