Greatest running backOkay, Doak has a trophy named after him and won a Heisman. We also had Eric Dickerson, Craig James, Zack LIne, Reggie Dupard, Wayne Morris, Alvin Maxson and Kyle Rote. Although I never saw him play, my vote goes for Doak Walker. ED comes in a close second since he still holds the NFL single season rushing record.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Greatest running backI have seen virtually all of them play. Obviously, Doak is first, then IMO it is a toss up between Rote and Dickerson.
Re: Greatest running backEric Dickerson.
Re: Greatest running back1 Eric Dickerson
2 Zach Line
Re: Greatest running backIf he had been healthy ShanDerrick Charles would be top 3 at least
Re: Greatest running backCharles Waggoner, who signed along with Dickerson and Craig James, was rumored to be the best of the 3 but was injured his freshman year and never played another down. So who knows what would have been.
Long live Inez Perez!
Re: Greatest running back
It's amazing to think about how good of a recruiter Ron Meyer was. Great times! Shake It Off Moody
Re: Greatest running backThe implication has always been that Waggoner would have been better than Dickerson. If so, we missed the greatest running back of all time. I'm highly doubtful he would have been better than #19 or even #32, who had a respectable pro career. Fun to play what if, though.
Re: Greatest running back
He would have been our LT! What a shame. Jamaal is evidence of how good he was.
Re: Greatest running backGood point, Arkpony. I forgot about Waggoner.
Imagine landing a group like that today, signing the equivalent of Waggoner, Dickerson and James.
Re: Greatest running backFunny to think, if Craig James had transferred to Alabama, we would be debating who was better, Dickerson or James!
Re: Greatest running backAs I recall, the year Dickerjames was signed, SMU signed the top 7 running backs in Texas. I could be wrong on that but we had Ron Meyer up here in Arkansas for an alumni meeting right after signing date and he was boasting about the group of backs SMU had signed.
Long live Inez Perez!
Re: Greatest running backI started to think about your post....you could be right considering we had a couple of fullbacks. I don't remember seven, discounting Ron's bs, we probably had five. I wonder if anyone remembers? I know we had a second All American from LA after Eric left, but he wasn't in the same class.
Re: Greatest running back
I wonder if Jerry Ball was included in that number. Wasn't he a fullback in H.S.? Dickerson, James, Waggoner, Drayton, Ball and who else?
Re: Greatest running back
I seem to remember Dickerson getting hurt early in his FR year and of that trio, Waggoner being the guy who seemed likely to get the most snaps...until he broke his neck returning a kick. Waggoner was a track star as well but if I remember correctly, his career ended early when doctors warned him how easily he could be paralyzed by another hit like he took returning that kick. I don't remember if he even continued with the track & field team.
