Battle for the Iron skillet looks to be a no go this year

Post by okcponyfan »

Rumors are that big12 is doing 9 conference games and 1 non-conf game, and the non conference game has to be a home game.

Kind of sucks

If we want them we could play there and have them return to Ford the next 2. That is the guess as to what Notre Dame will do with Navy.

Pretty good pair of articles about this in the DMN this morning. SMU is actually TCU's only non conference game to have not been cancelled, so we have that going for us. Also, the BIG 12 is mandating that the one non conference game has to be before the start of conference play, so that helps us as well.

TCU may want a cream puff for their only non conference game, but that may be hard to find as well. I would say the game is still on if we agree to play it in Ft. Worth, then it depends on how desperate we are to play the game which would mean playing 3 years in a row in Ft. Worth. Perhaps we could get the froggies to switch with us next year. We will see.

Yea thinking more about it the game still might be played.

a couple of reasons why i think this
1. proximity of schools, I think the argument for playing that non con at home is that they don't want big12 schools traveling all over the country. Not sure you could find a closer game for any big12 school than this game.

2. Thinking part of the reason is that some of the big12 schools only have 4 conference home games and 5 away conf games. If big12 keeps same schedule TCU would had 5 conference home games and 4 conference away games. If they played at SMU it would be 5 home and 5 away. (yes i realize that OU and UT have 4-4-1 every year) so big12 probably don't want OU or UT have 4-5-1 this year.

A con for the game being played. Probably one of the reasons for having all non conf games home games is then the non conference game is included in the big12 tv deal. If the game is away then its not in the big12 tv deal.

Isn't that "con" irrelevant tho, because if it's going to happen it will be because SMU agrees to go west this year, and gets two straight home games in 2021 and 2022 in return? Don't see that TCU can violate the Big XII decision that non-conf must be home.

SEC decision to not include a plus-one game screwed SMU (and lots of others, including half the ACC). If Texas at LSU was a go, then the Big XII would not have included a "home" requirement for the non-conf game.

If I'm the Frog AD, SMU would have been the first game I try to escape. If TCU wins it, they were "supposed to" win it. If they lose, they have to wear the label of losing to SMU in back to back years.

As AD, I'd take a game against Smalltown U, suit up the cheerleaders and trombone section to protect the players and go win by 60 points, and then start the season the Big 12.

It's no surprise that this got cancelled.

For what it's worth, the SMU/TCU game still appears on both schools' websites. But it sounds like cancelling is a done deal.

Need the details to come out. Who knows, maybe TCU offered to play the game if it was moved to Ft. Worth, and we said "no."

I know we all like playing TCU, but if I was SMU's AD, I would not give up this home game. If TCU wants to (or has to) back out, so be it.

Now that we lost this game, I really wish that the AAC would do an all conference schedule like the big boys. Would make the most sense and would be a schedule upgrade for us. I know there may still be a couple of premiere games that could happen for other AAC teams.

I say we go to a conference plus 1 schedule, 10 conference games and then pick a game to keep. We could ditch Texas St and UNT and play SFA at home and all our conference opponents. This would add UCF to our schedule. And, if in the next few days, every AAC team loses their "big" non conference games like us, and everyone just has cream puffs, lets just go to a 10 game conference only schedule.
