You're referring to the Aloha Bowl in 1984. Final score: SMU 27 Notre Dame 20RGV Pony wrote:...anyone know what color jerseys SMU wore in the bowl game versus Notre Dame in 1984?
Ranked #26 in SMU's 90 Greatest Football Moments, you can see the pic attached to it at this link: http://smumustangs.collegesports.com/sp ... ts-26.html
(for those too lazy, the Mustangs wore blue jerseys, white pants with red, white & blue piping and white helmets with red Mustangs and red, white & blue piping down the middle of the helmet)

Though I didn't go to the game... one of my favorite Mustang mementos which is now long gone, or hopefully packed up in my parents attic, comes from that game. My "I ain't afraid of no Irish" tee-shirt. (In the style of the Ghost Busters logo.)
That was cool. And to see how much times have changed - I think I got that shirt at the mall. You'll be lucky to find antyhing more than an SMU hat at most stores/malls these days... and I mean in Dallas.
Of course my sister-in-law has a great story about that game and, I should note here, that her only ties to SMU were that she grew up in Dallas and that many years later married my brother. Her family was vacationing in Hawaii at the time of the game and the Notre Dame football team just happened to be also staying at their hotel. When she found out they were there to play agains SMU she told her dad and convinced him to go (which wasn't hard as he's a KU grad and just a huge sports fan... just a side note; her sister and mother didn't go to the game). The night before the game she and her Dad went out and picked upt that same "I ain't afraid of no Irish" shirt. As they left the hotel the next morning she didn't think about the fact the Irish were staying at the hotel as she donned the shirt and they got on the elevator. Well, when the the entire offensive line got on the elevator with them that morning... she can tell you that she was, indeed, very afraid of the Irish. But she made it to the ground floor safely. And the Ponies, of course, did their part and won.

I want blue jerseys and red helmuts
The SMU team looked good in blue jerseys back when we were winning. Hayden Fry had started out with the Doak Wlaker red jerseys and evolved into the blue jersey with red helmut, which is still the best combination. Back to the future.
