Home attendance is a key indicator for traveling to bowls. If we win 7, there is a big chance they would take a 6 win team with better attendance.

I think 7 wins gets into a bowl...people would eat up the rags to riches resurrection story and that point won't be lost on some obscure bowl. I can just see ESPN's discussion of the DP, the break up of the SWC and the state it left SMU in. Now four years from going winless...here they are in a bowl game....Great story it would be!

Do you have a job? If not, I would suggest media relations at SMU. Sounds like a great story to me!!

Actually, it probably is eight to guarantee, we need to do better than .500 in conference.
Don't forget SMU was bowl eligible once and stayed home. The rags to riches won't fly; it didn't work before. While there are more bowls now, there were eight bowl eligible teams that did not go to bowls last year.

While I think we should all try and concentrate on a winning September before we make reservsations for bowl games, we must also realize that we have the advantage of the CUSA bowl tie ins. I think there are five. So as long as we are eligible we have a good chance of going. Now I will be the first to admit that if there is an extra team eligible in CUSA we may be the odd man out due to lack of fan base, but if we win the games we should, all else should take care of itself. The "DP to Bowl" tear jerker scenario could help in a tight decision, but I bet money would win out.
Back to reality though, lets just win the games we should and one or two we should not and then we will have no problems. The main thing about this year is to establish a record that will inspire better recruiting signees and build from there.

IF we got to be bowl eligible and there was a question about us getting invited because of lack of fan support, we could do what the Frogs did back in 1998. When when a slot for the Sun Bowl opened up because the Big 10 couldn't fill it, their alumns rallied (I assume through the Frog club) and put together enough money to guarantee that they would sell their allotment of tickets. They of course went on to beat USC in the game, which I think became a watershed moment for their program.
I would think we could raise enough money to do the same. IF we get to that point, there is no way we can let a bowl opportunity get away.

Yes, let's all focus on not losing to a d-2 team, please....

Once more: SMU does *not* play a D-2 team this year.
