84 years old. Parkinsons listed as the official cause. Sonny won over 600 games as a Head Coach. Too bad he never got the HC gig at his alma mater. Might have been fun if he was coaching at Marshall when SMU was a conference mate in CUSA

I was a big Sonny fan. I really liked a lot of the kids he recruited and it was a lot of fun watching Dave Piehler and Billy Allen driving for the basket. I was a little bitter, but understood, why they decided it was time to replace him. But Dave Bliss? My goodness what a drop off in caliber of character.

Sonny’s teams were very entertaining to watch.

I didn’t know that he played with future NBA HOF’er Hal Greer at Marshall and that after leaving SMU, Sonny Allen led Nevada to their first 2 ever NCAA tournaments.
