I have to agree - there is no reason for them to ever schedule us. Doesn't make much sense on either side. We should stick to non-conference opponents that are more "our size" like Baylor, or SEC teams like Ole Miss, Vandy, or Ark. Give us a few solid years of competitive match-ups w/ teams like Baylor and TCU, and then maybe 8-10 years from now we'll be ready for a game w/ UT. The A&M games on our schedule are already scary enough anyway....(I went to the one this year, and it wasn't pretty....)
I would LOVE to see UT and SMU have a game. From a selfish standpoint, they're my two favorite teams. What great memories!!!
Mack and Phil are good friends.. wouldn't surprise me at all if it happened. Does it make sense.. not really. But scheduling Arkansas State and Sam Houston doesn't make that great of sense for us either. What recruit wouldn't want to hear that he would be playing in Austin or College Station in front of HUGE crowds. It's a good selling point to a kid that might have been overlooked by the big schools. If SMU fails to make a bowl.. at least the kids would have played in front of 75k-plus fans. What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.
some of you guys are too negative. Ut schedules people for all kinds of reasons. They have played Houston and Rice havent they? The issue here is simply the OU game. In basketball, UT has plenty of chances to play in Dallas already with the conference tournaments and ncaa regionals being held at the AAC so often. I doubt its some conspiracy against smu or that we are any less worthy of playing than lots of other people.
I've heard its almost a foregone conclusion from the UT perspective. Dont know if OU is trying to work to salvage it. Mayor Miller blows another opportunity. She couldn't lead a donkey to water if she tried.
The Annual Texas/OU game in Dallas use to have more significance when they were in different conferences...not only were they playing for their states, but their conferences too. If they go to home and home, it will basically be like all other games and although still meaningful...it won't have the same impact or atmosphere. You won't see a stadium with half the crowd in red and the other half in burnt orange. There also won't be the State Fair of Texas adding to the atmosphere of the game either. Money trumps tradition every time in this day and age...what a shame.
I would think you're exactly right, Stallion. My impression is that it will move soon to a home-and-home arrangement in Norman and Austin, and when Jerry completes the Boss Hogg Bowl in Arlington, I've always assumed it will move there, so they can re-establish their presence in the Metroplex (not they'll lose their presence, really, but just to be seen, etc.)
I agree, they will make too much money doing it home and home to want to give part of it up for a neutral site.
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
