"War SMU Football" & Jim Rome Show

Postby McClown27 » Thu Mar 30, 2006 7:07 am

Fellas,

I am a clone who listens to Rome via the internet, my local sportstalk station chooses not to carry the program. I normally catch an hour online everyday. I have been surprised that no one from this board has ever called and said "War SMU Football, I'M Out." I guess this is kinda of board challenge to clear up this disturbing deficiency.

WAR SMU FOOTBALL
I'M OUT
P.S. I know this is a strong Ticket board.

I would do it, but I have to work during the day and can't sit on hold waiting for Jim to call on me... :(

I nominate Stallion to the task. I know he's got plenty of free time because he's on here pretty frequently (5710 posts). I figure if he took half the time he spends on rivals and devoted it to "getting racked" on Rome, he'd be a smackoff winner in no time and SMU would be a beneficiary of the jungle karma.
Just my two cents.

Are you complaining that your local sports talk station only addresses local sports??

Don't generalize too much .... there are many on this board who realize the Ticket is useless other than for the SMU road games.

Why are you "surprised"? The only college football teams he talks about are USC, UCLA and occasionally Texas and the big Florida schools. And if you're "suprised" that nobody has called Rome's show, why don't you do it?

No, I am glad WFAN covers local sports. I choose to listen to Rome on the internet.

My problem with the DMN and the Ticket is that I go to them for SMU coverage, and they don't provide it. If I want to hear about UCONN basketball, I listen to WFAN.

Come on, McC -- you sound like you pay a lot of attention to media coverage, so you know you're not going to get it from the Ticket.

What's funny about McClown is that he doesn't think the teams need to facilities until they show improvement, but he seems to expect that the local media should cover us despite any showing of improvement.

Facilities don't neccesarily lead to more victories. You were maybe too young to remember the expectations people threw around about Ford's impact on recruiting, and they were all wrong. Very, very, very wrong.

If we got more media coverage in Dallas, we would recruit better and attendance would be be higher. Under those conditions, we could even build new arenas!!

..help the old man...wtf does "WAR SMU FOOTBALL" mean?? and is the "I'm out", sort of like, "I just said something really cool and profound, Romey, so now I will take my bad self away..."??

In Rome-speak, "war" translates loosely to an expression of support and/or encouragement.

"War SMU football"
"War Dallas Mavericks"
Etc.
Also sometimes applied to a specific act, i.e.
"War Bud Selig finally exposing Barry Bonds for taking steroids"

"I'm out" is simply a Rome-inspired way of announcing "that's all I have to say, so I'm going to hang up now, but I'm hoping that by announcing my departure this way, you'll all think I'm brilliant and just a little edgy .... as I repeat what ever other Rome caller says."

What makes you think that suddenly getting tons of coverage in the DMN is going to get us better recruits? I seriously doubt most kids read the paper, except when they have been interviewed and go get that particular paper. What is going to impress them is seeing us on Saturday on ABC, NBC, CBS, ESPN, or Fox. Why should they cover us if we haven't shown any improvement. In fact, we got more national attention this year for our win over TCU than we have had in years, did that make this recruiting class better?

(and that was supposed to be despite no showing of improvement...posting in class again)

You are wrong here. Almost every recruit that comes to SMU lists the facilities as a reason. Do we get the top recruits in the Country or even the State, no. But there are many other reasons for that being the case. Like it or not facilities do inspire better recruits. But it is just a factor, not the only factor. If you had seen the facilities in old Ownby (when I was recruited) you would have been appalled. Even in the old SWC days when recruiting was more on an even level, SMU could have recruited better with better facilities. Now, do we need a brand new Coliseium right now? I do not think so but a nice practice court would be nice. A little flash is always nice.

The University of Arkansas is in the middle of no where. Not real impressive for young kids wanting to be in the limelight. But, they have exceptional facilities that allows them to recruit on a level with the rest of the SEC.

University of Arkansas has had some success and people come to their games. Until people come to our games and we have success, big-time recruits like Arthur are not coming. In that sense, facilities like Moody are fine for mediocre seasons with 1,000 fans at the games.

We need to change the model. I agree with Stallion that the academic standards must be arranged in such a way to compete with other schools. Otherwise, Moody II will be just as empty as Ford when we are not playing Texas Tech or A&M.
