Is SMU about to be left behind once again?Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?Who here thinks that the new Big 12 will be stable? The ACC could easily pick off Cincinnati or UCF or West Virginia. The B1G could easily pick off Kansas or Iowa State. The Pac could easily pick off Kansas or KState. Any B12 school would jump at that much of an income increase. Don't kid yourself.
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again? The Big 12 will have lost Texas, A&M, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri and Colorado and will have replaced them with West Virginia, TCU, UCF, Houston, Cincy and BYU. That is a serious downgrade. The conference is a shell of its former self.
If you judge conferences by the number of traditional household names/blue bloods, then the other major conferences are head and shoulders above the Big 12 SEC - Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, Texas, A&M, Oklahoma, Florida Big 10 - Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, Nebraska, Wisconsin Pack 12 - USC, Oregon, Washington ACC - Clemson, Florida State, Miami Big 12 - zero Tech and OK State aren't enough to carry the banner. The prestige is gone from that league.
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?ACC, you might want to add: Duke, UNC, UVA and GT as blue bloods. Also ND is a non-football member. My pipe dream is that the ACC wants into Texas market and taps us. You could have the privates division: Wake, Duke, BC, Syracuse, Miami, SMU (ADD UVA or UNC perhaps).
FSU, CLEMSON, NCS, GT, LV, PITT, VT. We'd probably have to add lacrosse. UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?Easy to do since we have a strong lacrosse club with their own top notch on campus field.

Interesting Foxsports ran this. UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?Solid article.
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?
Disagree with the analysis. I think and most people do that the PAC12 is trash. ACC only had Clemson and they're basically out. Insert "this is fine" GIF
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?
Whatever you think of PAC12 or ACC, they will remain P4/P5, i.e. automatous, conferences. and enjoy revenue streams the Group of 5 and perhaps the Big12 can't. My fear is a Upper and Lower Division of FBS (or new name) conferences and teams without the ability to move between them, e.g., Premier League. Mike Aresco will be making lemonade out of this lemon; but the separation will hurt recruiting, revenue and college FB fans. Pony Up

Understood, I completely agree this new realignment will hurt our revenue significantly. Hopefully Aresco gets BSU and a few others and the termination fees from the leavers to help fund us a bit. Recruiting I think will be fine given sonny is doing awesome. He's able to convince folks through our own players. All they have to do is listen to the stories like Mordecai and realize P5 isn't always the best path. With the expansion of the playoffs that we might have a chance while we wait for hopefully an invite. Insert "this is fine" GIF
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?I agree. We need Sonny to stay long term and recruit with the idea that our situation is a better path to an expanded CFB Playoff. Plus, they get to play in a great media market.
Lastly, we should challenge ourselves with a more challenging OOC schedule and be the first call-up in the future. Last edited by Water Pony on Thu Sep 09, 2021 2:25 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Amen. Sadly our OOC will be TCU + former AAC folks + NTCC (for some reason). Insert "this is fine" GIF
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?SMU's best path to relevance is to continue improving both football and bball programs and compete at a Top 25 level year after year. Obviously there are questions about the Big XII's ability to compete at a high level so if SMU can keep improving and Memphis does the same and our two programs dominate the AAC, it improves the chances the Big XII might decide it can use two more Top 25 caliber programs in the near future.
Re: Is SMU about to be left behind once again?
Good summary. Separate question. Will the Big 12 benefit in going next to 14 or 16 teams after adding the "fortunate four"? Does an even larger conference help them as the last and final P5 Conference? Theoretically , it would remove any hope of an additional conference, AAC or MWC, becoming a P6 and virtually finalize an Upper and Lower classification for FBS conferences. Pony Up
