Congratulations -- knock 'em dead, KG!
Re: Garrett goes to the Rams in the 5th round
St. Louis might be a perfect place for Garrett, was taken in the fifth round. The Rams lost Dré Bly to the Detroit Lions in free agency, and Aeneas Williams was released and then brought back (at a lower salary), but he's 35 years old and entering his 12th season. If you're not Darrell Green, that's getting pretty long in the tooth for an NFL corner.
Clouding the issue is that the Rams also selected CB DeJuan Groce (5-10, 192) of Nebraska in the fourth round. Like Garrett, he's a speed guy - not quite as fast as KG, but very close. He doesn't tackle as well as KG, but he'd probably make the team even if he never plays defense -- he's a terrific return man. Working in KG's favor is the fact that as much as any coach in the NFL, Mike Martz loves speed, and wants speed at every position. KG should play even faster on the Rams' artificial surface.
They also selected CB Shane Walton (5-10, 184) of Notre Dame ahead of Garrett. I don't know as much about him, but a little internet surfing says he's not as fast as either Garrett or Groce. Maybe Walton's a special teams guy?
Cornerbacks returning to St. Louis from last year's roster are:
Jerametrius Butler (5-9, 181) -- a former Phil Bennett student at Kansas State
Travis Fisher (5-9, 181)
Todd Howard (5-9 , 187)
Aeneas Williams (5-11, 200)
Clearly the Rams are a team that needed cornerbacks, and KG's size (5-9, 194) obviously didn't worry Martz and the Rams' braintrust.

Groce is a 4.55 guy. Also short at 5'9". Hard to believe he was picked ahead of Garrett.
Walton practically plods along a 4.60. He's a shade under 5'10", but he's supposed to be a playmaker.
I think Garrett has more upside than either. If you're going to draft a small corner, for pete sake at least get one with some athleticism. I think KG is stronger than both these guys too. Again, I have to think that if KG were better at turning and battling for the ball, he'd have easily gone on day 1. Seems that should be easily correctable by coaching.
Shocked that the Cowboys took another corner. Shame it wasn't KG.

PonyTales is right -- Groce is a real dangerous return guy. But you're right, he's not that strong. He got thrown around by some of the stronger receivers in the Big 12.
Since KG is my favorite Mustang, I guess I'm a Rams fan now!

Note Draft Analyst's specific enthusiasm on the Rams' choice of Kevin.

Interesting to note that the column was written by David Moore (former NBA writer for the Dallas Morning News), who either lives in Dallas or at least used to. He's probably one of few national writers who know about KG and SMU. In fact, he came to an SMU game a couple of years ago.
Nice plug for KG!
