The best ideal candidate for the job?We hear a lot of names around the rumor mill.... I have spent time this evening researching the best ideal candidates to head our program. I want to start off first by saying JT got screwed and I have nothing but full respect for him and wish him the best! He will def land on his feet...
This is the biggest turn-around in history for coaching changes, I have been looking at many programs who lost there head coaches and most importantly who is available... Many former head coaches are still available but we need to move fast, I do not think we can wait much longer or they will be gone.. We do not need to get an assistant there are proven winners sitting out right now without a job! I truly think the administration at SMU are going to have to hire an African-American coach to cover all angles.. Rob Evans? Are you kidding me, terrible hire... I am sorry if you cannot win at Arizona State you have issues... 11-17 this year at ASU makes this a tough choice.. Mike Davis obviously the best choice but UAB got him today. Going through different coaches and changes I came up with former Iowa State Head Coach Wayne Morgan, he was fired after 3 years with a great winning %. He avg. 18 wins per year in the Big 12 and had a similar situation with a new AD as Tubbs did. Iowa State made it to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament last year losing to North Carolina. He is a major recruiter and I think he would be great in Big D! It would probably to late to get him but who knows. I know he has big east coast ties and brought some of the best players from the east to Iowa, if you can bring those top players to Iowa they will be in heaven in Dallas. With Bobby Gonzalez going to Seton Hall today I am sure Manhattan is going to be all over him but we will see. Any thoughts?
Re: The best ideal candidate for the job?
Do you follow college basketball? Arizona State is not a very good basketball program and never has been. Evans did as good there as anyone has. And how many coaches could've won at Ole Miss? "Remember Danny - Two wrongs don't make a right but three rights make a left."
Re: The best ideal candidate for the job?
You are aware that there was a reason that Iowa State fired him and it wasn't because he didn't make the NCAA tourney this year. That little issue with D-I Scheduling pretty much got him fired. Considering that we're dealing with possible NCAA issues, I doubt you'd want to hire someone who might be considered "tainted goods" at best.
The AD at Iowa State made it very clear that D1 scheduling had nothing to do with it. There were no alligations or rules broken, it is just Gregg Doyel getting off on his stupid writings! The AD said his reasoning was he felt the program was not going in the right direction aka he is a new AD and wants to bring one of his own in. As of tainted goods are involved, what about Huggins and Sampson? I feel if we do not go after Morgan someone else is going to get a great hire. As for Rob Evans, Arizona State is a program that coaches call a sleeping giant! Any place that has the budget, campus and facilities I feel you can win there!
UAB got Mike Davis
Why don't we go out and try and get that NORTHERN IOWA coach? He had and coached a great group of unknown talent in the MVC and to the Big Dance.
Wayne Morgan would be unbelievable but also unrealistic. I do not think we could get him here in Dallas. $$$$$$$$ He was making over 750,000 a year at Iowa State but you never know! I have heard his named mentioned at NC State!
They bought out his contract for 1.5 mil, I am sure he is living pretty good right now. I totally understand what you are saying, if we have a chance to get a caliber coach who can win and recruit it is worth a shot.
I am not willing to concede that another assistant can't do the job. On the blog, I mentioned Tennessee assistant Scott Edgar, LSU assistant John Treloar, Florida assistant Anthony Grant, BC assistant Bill Coen.
Both Grant and Treloar have "Charlie Weis" resumes in that they are identified as the best assistants and head coaching prospects in the nation every year and never get a sniff for a head job. Of course, this year, Florida won the national championship and LSU made the final four.
Dallas would be a great place for Quinn, we have an overflow of Hair salons, tanning beds and nail salons. I beleive if we get Quinn, Dallas could have a shortage of hair gel.
I just don't want to see SMU making a hiring decision based on salary. We need the best coach that we can get. Not the best coach we can get for less than $300K a year. Just once I would like for SMU to step up and make a real commitment to the basketball program.
I also hope that the Idiot Copeland moves to Virginia tomorrow to never darken the sun around the Hilltop ever again. I am willing to help him pack. Life would have been much easier if we would have fired his worthless [deleted] several years ago. I love how he lays the blame at the foot of the people he has hired but never takes any blame for the fact that he is the most unsuccessful AD in SMU history and has not made an effective hire since he got here. RANT OFF! Class of '91
