Re: Is the Damage already done?I hope I am wrong but the writing seems to be on the wall. Reports indicate that SMU has offered substantial increases in his and assistant salaries as well as commitment to facility upgrades but with no signature on the contract. The sad truth is that as long as we are not in the Power 5 we will not have the resources or prestige to recruit and maintain a successful football coach. I'm about 75% sure that Sonny will be at TCU next year and I think that the interview process over in Fort Worth is a charade. If so, Sonny should vacate the campus immediately, let us keep our assistants for the remainder of the year, and give us a chance to snare a good head coach prospect before our players transfer and the recruits back off. Having said that, I really hope that he stays. TCU and Tech dumping their head coaches mid-season is bush league by the way. That kind of thing disrupts everyone's season.
Re: Is the Damage already done?I also reject the doom and gloom.
Sonny didn’t ask for Texas Tech and TCU to can their coaches mid season. Sonny’s responses to the media has been that he doesn’t respond to coaching vacancy questions during the season is more than fair. And he’s been consistent with that. Sounds like SMU has recently offered him and sounds like it was generally a healthy offer. But we know that our school has a history of dragging their feet and not being bold when they needed to be. Not all that time, but enough for that reputation to be fair. Thus, can you fault a coach who might be trying to leveraging the coaching carousel to get more for himself, AND more for the program and staff? He and his staff are still bringing in recruits…solid one signed within the past week. If Sonny leaves for a bigger job, that’s something that was unthinkable between 1989-2015. Now when a coach can come here, do great things to elevate the program, and parlay that into a bigger gig, that’s not something that makes me spiteful or bitter. …And the guy is still coaching SMU. I suggest we give this a minute to play out. And, that we not immediately flush our brains of all the things Sonny has done to elevate the program and the school. I for one will be happy if he re-signs and continues his great work at the Hilltop.
Re: Is the Damage already done?
While he may not respond to the media has he denied he had an interview with the people in ft.w.?? Since we have offered to almost double (his known) salary and more for assts. etc. why is he refusing to sign if he wants to be here?
Re: Is the Damage already done?
Me too.
Re: Is the Damage already done? One of today’s announcers said he asked SD about the rumors. His response was the details were being worked out. He asked how he thought this would affect the players. He said he asked the captains if I’ve needed to make a statement. They told him it wasn’t necessary because they are focused & have his back.
Re: Is the Damage already done?I'm not worried. If he stays we will continue to recruit well and win 8+ games each season. If he leaves we will bring in someone that will recruit well and continue to win 8+ games each season and hopefully avoid the November swoon. I'll be happy if he stays but won't be upset if he leaves. $4 million per season is an awful lot of money for a coach that has not figured out a way to avoid a yearly November swoon and has not yet landed in the conference championship game much less won us a conference championship. While we are not P5 we are one of the top 2-3 non-P5 jobs in the country and there is plenty of interest in this job. The most important piece in this whole thing is keeping Ra'Shaad Samples who is the lifeline to our Dallas recruiting and a key stakeholder in our Dallas marketing along with the Mayor.
Re: Is the Damage already done?I'm not mourning the loss of any coach to another job until they at least get us to a mid-major conference championship game.
Re: Is the Damage already done?
Your post mirror my feelings. C-ya @ Milos!
Re: Is the Damage already done?Maybe we should take yesterday's game as a statement made by this team?
One word for Sonny: McFarland
Re: Is the Damage already done?
You apparently haven't seen the movie.
Re: Is the Damage already done?
+1
Re: Is the Damage already done?
Neither have I. I am sure more than just two of us are lost on that comment.
Re: Is the Damage already done?Kevin Costner film about a legendary former H.S. football coach turned cross-country coach who had to make a career decision and in the end chooses his team and town (McFarland, CA) over a more lucrative offer from Palo Alto. Good movie I would recommend
