I smell a one-man Morgan fan club.

Actually, I smell something else and it's not like the tempting aroma that the moody scoreboard used to flash back in the day.

oh and btw after glancing at Iowa St's roster I think there were about 8 JUCOs/Prep school players on their roster-can't remember the exact number but these aren't the traditional recruiting targets of SMU.

I am actually in the J-Tubbs fan club but I know what is going to take to turn a program around and your typical good HS players are not going to get it done. When is the last time K-State has been sucessful? They are used to recruiting HS athletes, I guarantee they will be be playing for the Big 12 championship in two years and by the way that roster will be filled with JUCO players.

you all are funny and just do not get it! it is amazing to me how people can be comfortable with .500 basketball. When was the last time we made it to the NCAA tournament? I know Dement never made it in 9 seasons! A University like this should have the ability to get top players and it should not matter where they come from, as long as they get in academically. JT would of had this thing rolling if he had more time and I think Orsini is going to stand for no mediocrity which means we have to bring someone in the Juco and prep ties. I will not even mention anything about a new coach and it is all opinions anyway.

I've spent 10 years annoying a great many people on this board saying the same thing but its not likely to happen at SMU-you're preaching to the choir.

Morgan: Best candidate

Postby bigmoney » Sat Apr 08, 2006 11:54 pm

Great comments today from all of us SMU faithful. I am not a one man Morgan fan. But if you know anything or follow college basketball over the years, you would hopefully come to some conclusions:
1. Morgan is the best African American candidate with BIG time Prep and AAU ties available. If you don't have these, you will NEVER WIN in this climate. Look what Huggins is already doing at K-State.JUCOS, Prep Schools, and looking at hiring an AAU coach so he can get players. Kimbillhoops was 1000% correct earlier today about this statement.
2. If you are doing some research, research the names of past Syracuse All Americans: Douglas, Coleman, Moulton. Guess who recruited them: MORGAN. Helped put Syracuse in pretty good positions to win and continue to get some of the best recruits in the EAST.
3. I am shocked as a long time SMU fan and college b-ball junkie that we would continue to think as some are thinking. If we don't change NOW, SMU will never be above a 500 team and we will be doing this 4 years from now again. That is why I am high on Morgan. He has been to the top and knows how to recruit and win. Also, has the ability to bring in great x and o men as assistants. Has great connections.
4. Look at his big men this year at ISU.Freshmen just don't have the ability to help their first year in a conference like the Big 12. Taggert was highly recruited at a PREP SCHOOL, but was sick for 4 months and lost 30 pounds. Coaches can't control that aspect of the game. MORGAN overachieved this year given the fact he only had 2 guards. If he was still at ISU and had his team returning, they would be an excellent team. Remember, he beat Iowa, Nothern Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Colorado, Kansas State and lost in overtime to Texas A & M, to Oklahoma in Norman after leading by 7 with 60 seconds to go, and in the last minute to Tech in Lubbock. All of this with a freshman frontcourt! Might want to also research his PREP school committments in the EAST. The man can just get players and players win championships!
5. I am just tired of losing at SMU. We just need to get the best African American candidate and Morgan is the best out there.

This post is def for buddha! First of all you are so big time with your 350 posts! It is really sad someone has the abilty to say such unrealistic statements about other people especially when they are all on the PONY EXPRESS together! Unlike your egotistical self, I want to WIN!!!! I am not trying to bring any single individual in to this program to make the community happy or most importantly the community who wakes up in the morning and looks at the DM-News to see if SMU won or not..... You are def that typical fan and it is very obvious to read your bandwagon statements. If we do not get someone to Moody who has recruiting ties it is going to be another long 30 years, maybe my 5th generation great grandchildren will be able to see the headlines one day " THE MONKEY IS OFF THE BACK, THE MUSTANGS MAKE IT TO THE NCAA TOURNEY" Until then we need to stop irrational thinking and get what is best for us! We are in the C-USA, Memphis, UAB (with Mike Davis), it is not going to get any easier. Buddha- One last question, who would you like to head the program here at SMU? Let me guess Fran? Evans? Ashby, what is your connection to SMU hoops? Alumni? What year?

Bigmoney, feel free to answer the same questions.

Who cares what their connection is? If they are totally unconnected that would be great - we need more people totally unconnected to SMU to have opinions an offer advice - and support the program.

AAU conections, not high school coach connections, are more important when recruiting today. That is unquestionably true.

Morgan: BEST Candidate For The Job

Postby bigmoney » Sun Apr 09, 2006 8:43 pm

I am just and have been a long time fan of SMU basketball. Played college ball many years ago and I keep track of major college programs.A B-Ball junkie!
You have to have ties to major AAU programs and Prep schools to win at this level and above. That is where the North Carolinas, etc... are getting their potential recruits. If you don't believe me, ask around to see where Calipari is recruiting. Memphis will continue to win conference championships if you don't do the same. What we need is someone that can out recruit him and Morgan is the man.Morgan's record at Iowa State is very good. We don't need a Rob Evans who could NOT build a program at a school that has a tremendous facility, weather, etc... If a coach can't get East coast all Americans to come to where it is 84 degrees in the winter, etc... something is wrong. Arizona was getting all the in state recruits from the Phoenix area right under his nose!
Recruiting is the key. A throughbred will beat a regular horse everytime! All we get is the regulars.
