MDJ - I graduated from SMU in 1981 and have had season tickets since Texas Stadium! I do agree that he has made some mistakes, but most of his mistakes are because we are stuck at G5. His last 2 football coaches, Morris/Dykes, have left because they wanted the upside of P5. Although I did not like Morris from the moment he arrived, we all have to admitt that we were for the most part initially happy - it came down to Morris or Herman. Both coaches were top candidates at the time. Sonny has been a good coach, but TCU is probably a better job right now - P5 versus G5! The problem is you do not leave to go to your schools 100+ year rival. I actually believe that by staying until the end of the season he thought he was doing the honorable move, but he needed to leave over a month ago. Staying has hurt the players and the program.

So disappointed with Sonny. Really thought he wanted a legacy here. Leaving is one thing, but leaving for our biggest rival is hard to forgive.

"You do not leave to go to your schools 100+ year rival." You ever heard of Saban and LSU and Alabama?

He really shouldn't. I'll never forgive him for this.

If he has signed a contract with another university, there is no way he should be on our sideline tomorrow.

Saban went to the Miami Dolphins from LSU. That makes a difference.

I knew Sonny was a BULLSHIDARTIST from the time I heard from him or elsewhere his favorite team as a kid was SMU, and he always wanted to coach here. The previous used car salesman as you know used that same line

Stuck in a G5 should be history in a year or so with expanding the playoff to 10 or 12. You win your G5 conference, and you go to the big dance.
May the forth be with us.

Re: Lots of smoke... any official statement?
Sonny got a seven year contract offer from us, but it did not contain non-financial items he considered necessary to seal the deal. One might guess it had to do with further facilities upgrades, but IΓÇÖm not sure.
By the way, LashleeΓÇÖs already been recruiting certain members of DykesΓÇÖ SMU staff. One hopes that includes Samples.

No way Samples stays. I bet heΓÇÖs the first one Sonny takes

Re: Lots of smoke... any official statement?
What "items"? Were they realistic requests or poison pills to foil the deal? I doubt we ever know the full truth, but I hope SMU did the right thing and lays it all out after the fact to set the record straight.

Samples can do much better than that.

I canΓÇÖt believe Sark isnΓÇÖt going after Samp. More money for Samp and the SEC. Plus, he wouldnΓÇÖt be working for a boss thatΓÇÖs a known liar.
