SMU rarely gets it...1. I was not fot the Tubbs hire in the first place, but when you give a guy a contract, you let him finish...if he really violated any major rules, why did we pay out his contract?
2. I am sure Orsini must have somebody in mind. Nice of Copeland to take the fall for him. 3. Why is nobody paying attention to the fact that Williams essentially framed Tubbs? Worst of all...we are going to get some run of the mill coach that is going to be no better than Tubbs. If we fired Tubbs and then announced our new Head Coach Mike Davis, nobody would have complained. DBB

thank you for your common sense. jtstang said it well too. If at this point all you have is minor violations (very minor i might add), but the investigation is not complete, then you might oughta wait to fire anybody until the investigation is complete. Instead of firing them the week before national signing day on top of it. Genius, simply genius.
Name a cheater that wasn't given a buy-out of his contract-there are only a handful. That argument sounds nice-but isn't what happens in the college sports marketplace. All the big cheaters like Bobby Collins and Jackie Sherrill et all get bought out -not fired without compensation. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the reason for this and yet I've heard this same rationale posted on here about 50 times in 2 days.
i agree he would get a buyout no matter what. But lets have the major violations. I wouldnt refer to someone as a cheater for burgers, soap, practice time and minor tutoring would you? I sure wouldnt compare them to Jackie Sherrill or Booby Collins.

Good question.
While I don't agree with the reasons (made public) for the firing, I have no problem with the timing. If you've already made up your mind (pre-determined or seen enough evidence), do it as soon as possible. A lot of solid coaches are already off the market, and there are still plenty of openings yet to be filled. We don't want to wait until every single one of them is filled, and then fire our coach and start the search.

valid point, IF we are going after a coach that other people want and can get him. Thats a big if. Also, you seem ok with the notion that this could have been pre-determined. Thats where we differ greatly. I think its horribly unfair and also damaging to program if this was pre-determined.
No, I'm not OK with it being predetermined. I'm just saying that if they've already made up their mind, be that predetermined, through evidence, whatever, its best to move quickly. When losing coaches have infractions/violations, they should probably not campaign to get extensions. Blog has referenced that a lot of people thought he was unstable, and his decision to take money from boosters was moronic. This whole thing is his fault, Williams was trying to avoid getting SMU athletics into bigger trouble.
If he had not taken the money, he would still be the coach. Based on the timing, this was not planned. Copeland was probably looking forward to recovering the last few months of his contract, not fire the coach he had hired two years prior. Willis to slot receiver!
I still wonder why in the world Tubbs broke the rules, however minor that they may turn out to be when he knew that SMU wouldn't tolerate any rules infractions? He had to know when he signed his contract that SMU had a zero tolerance policy about that, yet for whatever reason he brole the rules. Why?
Our current athletic model almost encourages cheating because we are at such a disadvantage. Malin and Tubbs were just trying to correct the competitive disadvantage. Willis to slot receiver!
since when does SMU have an absolute zero tolerance policy? Cavan was not fired over the Malin incident. Minor rules can get broken by just waking up in the morning. Dirty clothes happen. Either we had a mastermind plot regarding these violations or they are just random. If it has been proven that Tubbs did things systematically, then that would one thing. Nothing about this sounds systematic so far.
Then there's the little timing item of firing the coach less than a week before signing day. The good news is we won't be stuck with Tubbs recruits for four years. The bad news is that we won't have any new signees this year. I guess Matt will get plenty of playing time next year.
