It's like we fired Sonny (and don't have to buy him out) because we wanted to upgrade our coaching staff. Hope the new DC is at the level of our other assistants. If not for the loss of some recruits this whole situation looks a like a win for us.

Seems like we are getting a lot of really good hires but IMO the proof of that will be shown next year with our W-L record. Great coaches still need top level players and our success there remains t be seen.

Did TCU pay SMU to buyout Sonny's contract?

More than anything, I hope some of these new coaches are great recruiters. We lost a lot of traction, visibility and credibility having lost Samples. It’s critical to have top tier talent on the field to compete even though the AAC will become diluted and weak in the coming years. The won/loss record will look good on paper since our opponents will be sub tier thanks to Lil Ricky Hart.

Everyone assumes the AAC will be a lot weaker conference but who knows what happens over the next 5 years? Losing Cincy, Houston and UCF is a killer today, but UTSA looks like a program on the rise. Same for UAB after their having considered shutting down their program. FAU did a number on us in Sonny's 1st bowl appearance as SMU's HC (not going to count Frisco). USF was once a Top 10 program before anyone knew much about UCF. Things change so as bleak as things look today, who knows what the college football landscape looks like 5 years from now. Has anyone noticed how much the SunBelt has improved with Louisiana, App State and Coastal Carolina all making statements?
O.K. label me as cautiously optimistic. I just hope SMU's program continues to improve, regardless of our conference competition.

DC should be announced very soon, just a few more hours left.

IMO there are no major college level coaches that are DCs from SMU. If this indicates he is from SMU then that is a serious downgrade from what we need.
