SMU Win Streak Ends With Loss To USF Wednesday Night

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team' five-game win streak came to an end Wednesday night with a 62-56 loss to USF in Moody Coliseum. With the loss, SMU fell to 9-7, 3-1 in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls entered the contest receiving votes in the top-25 poll and improved to 15-5 overall, 5-1 in The American.

Savannah Wilkinson and Jasmine Smith led the Mustangs with 12 points each, while Sydne Wiggins added 10 points. Smith also had six assists, and Wilkinson led the team with six rebounds.

With the game tied at 50-50 after the third quarter, the Mustangs scored the first basket of the fourth quarter. USF took the lead, scoring six points over the next five minutes. With time winding down, the Mustangs were forced to start fouling and sent the Bulls to the free throw line three times in the last minute.

The Bulls took a nine-point lead midway through the second quarter, 28-19. SMU held USF to just two more points and Smith capped off a 15-2 run with a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 34-30 lead at halftime.

SMU is scheduled to play three of its next four games on the road, starting at ECU on Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT.

This year's SMU team is lightyears better than last year's team.
