Barry Hinson or Scott Sutton?

I've always thought SMU should be a consistent winner in men's basketball and while being exactly what NCAA basketball is meant to be ... running a scrupulously clean program, graduating student athletes, and winning games (18-22 wins a year) with a legit shot to participate in post-season play (NCAA and/or NIT) each season.

Missouri State's Barry Hinson and Oral Roberts' Scott Sutton could both do that for Pony basketball.

I like both guys (both OSU grads) but I think Scott has more potential than Barry. Scott would be a great hire for SMU.

Scott Sutton
121-91 in seven years as ORU's head coach, including a post-season record of 0-1 NCAA (2006) and 0-1 NIT (2005). Has lead ORU to two (2) Mid Con regular season championships, and one (1) Mid Con tournament championship in his seven seasons. Scott and his staff have recruited several very talented players to ORU and look for more of the same going forward.

Barry Hinson
168-113 in nine years as a head coach (2 at ORU, 7 at Missouri State), a 4-3 NIT post-season record (2000, 2005, 2006) and has consistently finished in the top half of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season standings, including a 12-6 record good for 2nd place during the recently completed 2005-06 season where the Valley was ranked fifth in conference RPI. Hinson's teams have advanced to the MVC tournament championship game three times, losing twice to Creighton and once the Northern Iowa in double OT. Two (2) of Hinson's teams have been snubbed by the NCAA selection committee ... in 2000 the Bears ranked 34th in RPI and in 2006 they ranked 20th, but went to the NIT both seasons.

Great point, PF. Check this out, dawg; why should I recommend a coach (Scott Sutton) who has beaten your C-USA rival (Tulsa) three (3) straight seasons by a double digit average margin of victory? Makes no sense at all. :roll:

Just wondering why all the Okies are concerned about smu is all. Bring it on, I would love to beat TU every year (they are a pitiful program now) - not a big accomplishment

Frankly, from a personal standpoint, I couldn't care less who SMU hires. However being a college basketball junkie from Oklahoma, I am familiar with Barry Hinson and Scott Sutton, and both makes sense to me as the right type of fit for your situation at SMU ... a highly regarded academic institution that should prioritize having a clean program from a NCAA compliance standpoint, graduating its student athletes, oh yes and annually winning more games than you lose with a solid opportunity for an annual post-season appearance (NIT or an occasional NCAA).

Not trying to get all interested in the SMU program or your business, simply sharing a couple of solid names that may not be on a lot of fans' radar screens ... quality people who didn't just get fired somewhere else. Make sense?

And you're right, TU basketball has fallen on hard times for the last three years, but they did manage to sweep SMU again this season. Doug Wojcik seems to be the right guy to get things turned around in the right direction. Too much tradition and too many tools to recruit with for the Golden Hurricane to stay down for too long.

Sounds good, okie. We'll see what happens. And for sweeping SMU, big deal. Last time I checked, our RPI was in the bottom of the NCAA's. If one is the right candidate, that would be great and maybe we can get out of our hole.

Frankly, this program is a joke right now.

Either one of their suggestions (Hinson and Sutton) are better than most of the no-names and women coaches I've heard suggested on this board. We'd be lucky to have either one. Face it, the Okies are right. :wink:
