For taller teams.

Postby BUS » Tue Mar 01, 2022 2:27 pm

Looking at the roster and what this team has developed into... Why not go Big against some teams.

5 - C- T. Clark
4- Franklen A.
3- Marcus W.
2 - Michael W
1 - K. Davis

Take the 4 and five with backups of J. Young and Todo
Then you have Bando to take minutes from 2 and 3

And we just run KD ragged or sub some minutes with Michael W. at guard.

Just thoughts that might lead to better play against BIGGER teams.

Clark is very limited for minutes on most nights.
That lineup takes Bandoumel (the team's best defender) and Michael Weathers (probably the most versatile player) off the floor.

Also, SMU has played with 3 or 4 guards all season. This is the wrong time to change a team's DNA.

While smaller teams have to figure out a way to deal with big teams, those same big teams have to figure a way to deal with smaller but athletic teams with interchangeable pieces like SMU. It has worked for 20 wins.

Understand, but we got plowed under against Whoston and the above team may... May have done better.

Just thinking out loud.

All of our bigs got early minutes against Houston but the Cougs post players were quicker and more athletic so our guys weren't very effective

Agunanne is not even remotely athletic enough to keep up with the Houston bigs. Fabian White runs circles around him all day. Our biggest issue was the unevenness of the whistle. White was all over the place constantly going over the back, fouling while trying to force steals, and hugging our players while diving for loose balls and got called for only 2 fouls. Meanwhile, Marcus Weathers barely touched anyone and was even on the ground getting stepped on and got called for a foul. Michael also got a bunch of minor touches called as fouls. When the other team excels at physical play and is allowed to run wild while your team depends more on passing and spacing and is not allowed to defend or given proper spacing you are going to be in trouble. To compound it we missed a ton of layups. Going big was not the answer against this Houston team. I don't have an issue with how Jankovich managed this game other than maybe he should have played Jahmar Young some more as he was very effective in his brief appearance.

Also Houston bricked a lot of shots where our guys were sometimes in position, but they clanked out so far that they went to the boxed out Houston players. Calling over the top fouls is nearly impossible because the refs do not have great sight lines for those calls. And if one of the players falls down when pushed, he'll get called for embellishment. So, you have to box out the moment the shot is taken, not when its on its downward path. Find a body first, box it out and then look for the ball.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
