I give up. Tubbs was robbed of the Coach of the Year award. I admit I was waiting with baited breath during the NCAA selection show to hear SMU's name. I was shocked when I didn't hear it. Then, when we didn't make the NIT, I was stunned. And I don't have the list in front of me, but I know most of SMU's recruits were HS All Americans. It is so obvious and undeniable that Tubbs had turned the SMU program around.

To suggest for one moment that Tubbs was not successful or that anyone in America could have done a better job is sacrilege.

I've asserted all those things haven't I? Thing is, when you hire a coach, any coach, you have to give him more than a lousy 2 years to turn around a down situation. Hope you give the next guy more than 2 and I sure hope he doesnt get in Max or Matts doghouse.

With the additude expressed by some on this board why don't we just shut down the program. Contrary to our past history with the right coach it can be relatively easy to be competitive in college basketball as opposed to football. In basketball you only need a couple of difference makers.

Look what George Mason, Gonzaga, and Wichita State have done recently. There are some restrictions that SMU has that make it more difficult, but the primary reason our basketball team has stunk is that we have not had a strong coach and have lacked an institutional commitment to the program. I hope the commitment will be there this time.

I believe I have said the same thing regarding giving a coach two years. We have two differences: First, I am not dismisive of nearly ever potential candidate. Second, I don't think Tubbs was getting the job done.

First, he withdrew his name from consideration (probably because Miami of the ACC contacted him). Second, he probably had fewer obstacles in recruiting at Miami. Third, I am sure the Committee asked him if he viewed the SMU job as one where he would stay, or as a stepping stone. He probably honestly answered a stepping stone. Tubbs said he wanted to retire here. Both had similar resumes, Tubbs was a known entity, Haith was not. Tubbs said the things the Committee wanted to hear, Haith probably didn't. We'll never know if Haith would have succeeded here or not. He would have inherited the same players Tubbs did for his first year. He would have had to deal with the same academic suspension for BHop, this year. All in all, what if's just drive us crazy.

George Mason had three seniors and one junior starting. Big difference there. George Mason made do with secondary recruits from the DC area (which hate to break it to you Dallas folks) is the best recruiting area in the Country in terms of depth. There is just no comparison. Yes each area has about the same number of top 100 players. But you could build a solid Division 1 team with the All-Met third team or honorable mentions.

The 2 years becomes relevant if Tubbs was fired for lack of performance. He needed more time for that. If it was due to NCAA violations then it was appropriate. Thus, the rub. We do not know all of the story as of yet.

As far as a new coach, the 2 years for Tubbs does not bother me if I have a good term contract (5 years). If they cut me loose in 2 at least I have income for 5.

Sure would like an experienced D1 Head Coach though. Evans is the only one I am hearing about so I am on board with him, especially with the package of assistants mentioned, but would be happy with any proven commodity.

I think you are sitting there waiting to paint me as dismissive. I am no more dismissive of Ro Blackmon than you are. I think I have said very positive things about Rob Evans. I didnt even say anything against Terry himself. My comment wasnt as deep as you wanted to make it. All I said was it seems obligatory to consider the UT assistants. Nothing more, nothing less. once again, wake me up when its over. I'm not going to argue for or against anybody. I'll probably just support em, a foriegn concept to alot of people around smu.

That is certainly the rub for me. The news reported so far has been comical, and the bigest rub is Gramps burger set up. If Tubbs truly cheated, then good riddance.

Anything less than a proven program builder will be a big mistake. I wanted a proven head coach when JT was hired, but since we could'nt get one I thought he was the best alternative.

I can agree with the point that sometimes it takes loneger than 2 years to make great progress. But I think the point that Blog is making is that it is very possible to have a turn around occur within those first 2 seasons.

I simply don't think Tubbs was getting the job done. Do we really think that that 4-10 in CUSA and a losing season with such a weak schedule was the most any coach could have gotten out of this team? I really think you could just roll the ball out on the court, kick back and watch the team win 3 games in conference on talent alone. Many coaches would have faired far better last season in my opinion.

Again, even the staunchest Tubbs supporters among us are used to the fact that he's gone. The problem is that we do not know why he is gone, and SMU continues to allow the burgers and Cheer story to perpetuate. Moreover, SMU has done nothing to sanction a known jack@ss in Max Williams for his conduct. Let's not forget, as has been been reported by people on here in the know, Williams goes back as far as pre-DP days and was a big buddy of Bob Hitch and his regime. Tubbs is gone and we gotta accept it even if we don't like it. But I'll never get used to the way SMU has handled this and I'll never like the fact that Max Williams is allowed to set foot on the Hilltop ever again.

The example that started this thread was Haith. First, Miami is in the ACC. Being in the ACC makes it a lot easier to recruit players of high calibre. They also have a successful football program so they are not an unknown commodity. SMU has been mediocre to poor in every revenue sport for years. We have self-imposed super restrictions which make it harder to recruit great players. Miami seems not to have many restrictions at all. He's done a great job. But would that have translated to SMU, no one knows.

I kid with many of your posts, but for what it is worth I do agree with your point in this matter.

But, since BB can be turned quickly, and with all the stars starting to align with some admission changes, possible JUCO help, new AD, and rumors of some decent sounding candidates, my hopes are up for a quick rebound.

FWIW The Sporting News is touting Haith for the NC State job.

I live in Wilmington, NC, and there has been a lot of press here surrounding Terry, including news stories on TV, Paper, etc. This is a small town, a beach town, with the closest major sport being two hours away (Carolina Hurricanes). They sell out bball games, get the cover of the Star News every week during bball and baseball seasons, and there is no football team to compete with.

Now I love the school that I went to for undergrad and law, but in all honesty, in comparing the two schools, i can't imagine Terry choosing SMU over UNCW, unless the $ is that much better. Smu gets no home press, hasn't been to the tourney since 93, has old fac's and now we have the "burgergate" mess. Why step into that position??
