Looks like Terry is out

Sounds like he won't be leaving UT this year, although the article doesn't exactly rule out his contention for the SMU job.

Longhorns assistant basketball coach Rodney Terry said he has removed his name from consideration for the vacant head coaching position at North Carolina-Wilmington.

"Right now it's not the right fit for me," said Terry, a former assistant at Wilmington. "I'm happy with my situation at Texas. I love working for coach (Rick) Barnes."

Terry, 38, interviewed last week for the position at Wilmington. He also has talked to Steve Orsini, the incoming athletic director at Southern Methodist, about the open head coaching position at that school.

Virginia Commonwealth, meanwhile, contacted Terry about its vacancy after Jeff Capel left to become head coach at Oklahoma.

Terry did not renounce himself as a candidate at those schools, but he reiterated, "I like my job at Texas. We have a chance to win a national championship."

I read this differently than you do, SMUPhil. I wonder if this means Terry thinks (or has been told) he is the leader for the SMU job. As we all, know, it's the go-to move for candidates "to remove themselves from consideration" for certain jobs. More often than not, it means one of two things: either they've been told they're not going to get it, or they withdraw because they think they're going to get another gig. This story quotes him saying the Wilmington job wasn't a good fit. But he refused to bail out of the Virginia Commonwealth and SMU gigs. He didn't even say "I plan to be at Texas next year." He said he's "happy" at UT, likes Barnes and "likes" his job. Sounds to me like someone who is playing politics while actively pursuing other employment.

Something is going on at UNC-W. Everybody is pulling out, yet they haven't filled the position and are interviewing new candidates. They have an assistant from the University of Denver coning in tomorrow.

It is a shame that we did not get a chance to interview Brownell. He would have been a perfect candidate.
