Re: Stanford sports
If SMU would take their sports as seriously as Stanford, we wouldn't be in this mess. That says it all about our administration.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Stanford has won at least one NCAA team championship each academic year for 46 consecutive years, starting in 1976–77 and continuing through 2021–22.
Stanford won 25 consecutive NACDA Directors' Cups, from 1994-95 through 2018–19, awarded annually to the most successful overall college sports program in the nation.

I'm not sure how much SMU draws from its endowment every year vs. the $38MM that Stanford drew. However, SMU has over $30MM less in broadcast and NCAA cash flow. Stanford football and hoops aren't exactly excelling.
In the Stanford article above, Boskin said students have repeatedly told him that student-athletes are a big part of their experience at Stanford. “ Our student-athletes live with the other students. They’re not separate dorms or fed separately like in a lot of other places ΓǪ They’re an integral part of the Stanford experience of undergraduates.”

Re: Stanford sports
IIRC Stanford has an athletics endowment aside from their regular endowment. Sports expenses are paid for by the the athletics endowment hence less impact on their other budget areas. Several years ago there were some comments about SMU establishing an athletic endowment. I think we got a re-seat instead.

If Stanford alumni ever decide to field a top-notch BB team via NIL, watch out
FB might be more challenging due to academic constraints, but with BB you can accomplish it with only 8 or 9 'student' athletes
