Why Doh is Wrong for SMU!

Postby Duke Blue Blood » Thu Apr 20, 2006 2:49 pm

It was not the tough ACC schedule that made him lose in 2001-02 (8-20 Record), it was bad coaching. This is with talent that is easily 3X better than SMU has.

Hampton - 11/16/01 - L 77-69 - AT HOME

Davidson - 11/20/01 - L 58-54 - AT HOME

CofC - 12/21/01 - L 66-60 - In Charlotte, might as well be HOME

Ohio - 2/20/02 - L 86-78 - AT HOME

Ok. So hire him with the understanding that an assistant coach will head up the X's and O's. His recruiting ability alone warrants a hire.

So was it an easy ACC schedule that made him win the year before?

recruiting ability? That might be the biggest unknown about the guy. Recruiting to UNC proves nothing. Evans has much more of a proven track record in recruting to rebuild average to below average programs such as Ole Miss.

Agreed that is a very big unknown.
But I would guess more kids know who he is over Evans. And as a sidenote, have a UNC friend who said he would buy season tickets to watch the ponies next year if they hired Doh....AND BY NO MEANS DO I THINK WE SHOULD HIRE HIM B/C ONE PERSON SAID THEY WOULD GET TICKETS.....just thought it was interesting side note.

Personally I like both of them and would be pleased with either evans or doh, anything else and I will be disappointed.

NBA Talent

Postby Duke Blue Blood » Thu Apr 20, 2006 3:13 pm

No, they won because they had

Joseph Forte (NBA), Jason Capel (NBA), Kris Lang (Some NBA) and Brendan Haywood (NBA)

He lost some talent from the 2000-01 team, so you can not expect him to replicate what he did in 2001-02. My point is that he lost to some VERY BAD teams at the Dean Dome.

He might be. But the buffet line is pretty picked over at this point. Or to use another analogy. Its five minutes before closing time at the bar and one woman is covered with moles, another has a foot long schnoz, and the last one is bears a remarkable resemblance to Peruna. Do you settle or do without?

Contrary to popular belief, all of us can read. And unlike most of the candidates, there is plenty to read about Matt Doherty.

Recruiting:
He could recruit as an assistant at KU.
He could recruit at Notre Dame, the one year he was there.
He could recruit at North Carolina.

Gameday:
I found one article that says Doherty got outcoached in one game (it was a Duke game, btw). I can find a dozen articles that say he knows the x's and o's of college basketball as well as just about anybody.

Temperment:
He collapsed under the pressure of his dream job. If you want to be concerned about anything, be concerned about that.

With the abundance of "negatives" surfacing about each of the announced candidates, one would like to think there is a darkhorse or a "secret" candidate that has not been mentioned publicly.

Nice Rack

Postby Duke Blue Blood » Thu Apr 20, 2006 3:24 pm

I am not sure we are that bad off. There are no supermodels in the bar, but there is at least one chick at the end of the bar with a nice rack.

Yes, I understand that we've recruited the first openly gay men's head basketball coach in NCAA history. Big Gay Al.

I would hardly say the buffet line is picked over. Both Doherty and Evans have impressive resumes. Neither perfect. But I would consider either to be quite an upgrade from Dement or Tubbs. These are established guys that we actually have a chance to bring to the Hiltop.

DBB, what about Doh's success at ND??? What about his quick turnaround at FAU??? 13 win total improvement in his first first season at those 2 schools. I will bring that up until someone gives me a reason to think its invalid when evaluating Doh and his ability to turn a program around.

I'm super. Thanks for asking.

Look, SMU is not going to get a prince for its next coach. SMU is going to have to kiss a toad and hope he turns into one. Quit looking for the toad without warts. All toads have warts. The goal is not even to find the toad with the fewest warts; the goal is to find the one that is most likely to turn into a prince.

Just avoid the toads with horns, they are really lizards. :P

DBB is full of it. We're talking about the National Coach of the Year who recruited Felton, May and McCants.

I don't know enough about Notre Dame basketball to tell you why. Maybe Troy Murphy (weak response).

I know that he mad a commitment to them (ND) and then left after one season(I know it was Carolina).

He is going to do the same thing to FAU. This, after they decided to be the first to step-up and stomach the damaged good. One year and then gone.

He will do the SAME to SMU. Not a stepping stone my friends, just a paycheck.
