O'Leary had baggage. Price had baggage. To say Doherty has "baggage" from UNC is absurd. His resume sparkles except for one 8-20 season and some players with hurt feelings for getting yelled at. That's not "baggage"; he didn't do anything morally or ethically questionable. I'll take the body of work at Kansas, especially ND, and yes, at UNC (as well as FAU). Let's face it - we are SMU, with some baggage of our own. We'll be damn lucky to get a former NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR with a very good overall winning percentage and major national name recognition. Evans is a good man with an adequate resume - honest - which is very important - but basically a .500 guy - not too exciting - despite his apologists' argument that his jobs were at schools not known for basketball (like SMU, by the way). He'd probably be well-liked, play by the rules and be circa .500 at SMU, too. Bottom line, his hiring would elicit a collective yawn from the national media and the college basketball world - and deservedly so. Doherty would be a coup. Orsini would repeat for SMU basketball what he did for UCF football.

No. He has baggage. When he left UNC, they thought his temperment was out of hand.

As the line in the musical Rent goes: "I am looking for baggage that goes with mine."

Wait, did I just quote a musical? a 90's musical about gays and aids? Who is this? I don't know you. Who is this? Don't come here, I'm hanging up the phone! Prank caller, prank caller!

Doherty, on the other hand, wants to get back to a big program similar to what he hadat UNC. To do that, he HAS to win here, and I imagine he'll do whatever it takes. I like that!

Please cut this out and stick it on your frig. Read it every day until you are 59 then you have my permission to throw it away.

If he didn't have baggage then he would not be at FAU right now looking at us. But I love it! I hope he signs on with us tonight. Maybe he can shake up the Faculty, help change the model, and get some more wins for us.

As much as I hate to agree with blog, actually I like agreeing with blog he is one of the few people that is sane on this board, Dohorty has a ton of baggage. Rumors of him being to deal with not only from a players perspective, but also a administrators perspective isn't just made up, just like Tubbs being crazy and letting his program get out of control wasn't made up (and yes I am expecting a hail storm of JT support with that comment, and yes the evidence hasn't been released to paraphrase the arguement that will be forthcoming).

Somehow, if you believe the news stories, Dohorty has learned from his mistakes and now walks on water. I just don't believe it, and no I'm not happy about this hire. I will now go back to my hole of where all us negative people are hanging out and wait for the feedback where Dohorty is is the greatest hire we have ever made. All he did was screw up North Carolina what was deemed impossible. It's a program that football sholarship guys willingly show up just to be a part of the team (Julies Peppers and one of my all-time favorites David Noel for example) let alone basketball players who grow up wanting to be the next Tar Heel star and he somehow managed to miss the tournament two years in a row.

Also I don't want to hear the excuse that he had freshmen playing, umm Memphis just made the Elite 8 with only two senior/juniors in their top 10 players, and I think that Florida just had 4 sophmores starting on a national title team. And if somehow will counter that we cant recruit those same guys well lower level programs also rely on young guys as well, Montana (lower then us) started two freshmen and won a tourny game and Southern Illinois was so young this year that they litterally have everyone back from a NCAA tourney team. For kicks Wichita St.'s point guard was a freshmen too. The point of all that (besides trying to refute every response before it comes) is to point out that young people win games at every level of Division I basketball, and Dohorty manged to lose at one of the Top10 programs in the country because he is wacko, not because his guys were young. So keep praising him, just do it with a full picture of the what you are getting.
