You post a steady stream of negative expectations and when you do try to be positive, it's with false notions (SMU today is ranked higher than SMU 30 years ago) that seem designed to stir up negative sentiments from others. You and many others are vastly overreading this report, in any event. SDSU is working to get their $6M check out of the MWC. They haven't announced that they are permanently staying, or that they're staying past the next three weeks for that matter.

I fully expect to go through this Pac12 realignment talk all over again in 10-12 months. I think SMU has handled this all pretty well, unlike SDSU leadership.
As for SMU in the 2023 season, I think a good goal would be an appearance in the AAC title game.

I am in the camp that believes our conference affiliation is not important. We need to upgrade facilities, keep adding 4 and 5 star transfers and beefing up our NIL so that we can win championships and make the NY6 Bowls and/or FBS playoff and NCAA tournament appearances in men's basketball. If we do that we will have lots of fun and be attractive to networks. Who cares if we are in the PAC-12 if we are back to being bottom dwellers. I want to win big. I'm very jealous of Tulane.

We will find out how important conference affiliation is if we aren't invited to the PAC and recruits start de-committing. That will be a test of NIL strength to a certaine extent but, in the long run, the better the conference the more interest we will earn in Dallas and the more our donors will be willing to cough up. BTW, John Canzano, who I respect, is not as pessemistic as many of us when it comes to the possible extension of a PAC 12 invite this summer. I recommend his paysite for anyone who thinks that there is a possibility that it will still happen. I learn a lot about PAC 12 culture from him.

If we win the conference and get to college football playoffs and have respectable showing again probably the one seed, we may have multiple suitors. Beat LaT.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

There is no doubt in my mind that the PAC wants SDSU and SMU. But we aren't ready yet to replace USC and/or UCLA. We need at least one football championship in this century.

Rowing and horse back riding success is cool, but the needle doesn’t move an inch. We have to WIN the AAC NOW! Top 20 - Conference title, big - bigger bowl, playoffs! Otherwise, we are just Tulane with cooler stuff, Rice with pretty girls, Tulsa with a kick A BSchool…Department of Redundancy Dept - The time is NOW! Otherwise, HI UTSA.

From Saturday's New York Time's Billy Witz: These are the scenarios that San Diego State had to game out. The Aztecs, who came within one final push of winning a men’s basketball championship and who regularly exhibit a quietly competent football team, are in a familiar spot. They agreed in 2011 to jump to the Big East for football, while playing in the Big West for other sports. But two years later, that agreement collapsed and they remained in the Mountain West.
Last month, the San Diego State president, Adela de la Torre, wrote a letter to the Mountain West saying the school intended to leave and asking for more time. A flurry of back-and-forth letters ensued.
In the end, San Diego State determined that its conference exit may well be negotiable, as many before it have been. And so the school concluded that if a move to the Pac-12 were to happen, it would happen in time — deadlines be damned.

Don’t forget about the men’s swimming AAC championship! There are 2 teams in the AAC; SMU and Cincinnati. You know what that means for next year when Cincy is gone…automatic championship! Wait…maybe the Pac12 could take SMU men’s swimming only?

I’d vote for that as an initial step. However, our level of swimming is currently way behind the PAC-12 powers like Cal and Arizona State. In any case, Swimming & Diving for Men and Women need to be in a strong conference. This will help recruiting and benchmark the performance levels we need to compete at.

Does men’s swimming have a conference affiliation for 2023-24?
