Re: Realignment Update
West coast sucks for TV because the of the game times plus the west coast has no people compared to the east.

This is true. The MWC has 4 flagship schools and is way behind the AAC in viewership. And the PAC has 6 and it's main competition is the B12 which only has 2 (correction) after UT and OU leave, and they are expanding east.

Re: Realignment Update
Conversely, yesterday I skimmed an article about how population and affluence are moving south. So if PAC, ACC or Big were forward-thinking, they would all be looking in this general direction (which one might conclude SEC did prior to snapping up OU and UT).

Re: Realignment Update
They have 2 top ten markets (LA, SF), 6 top 20 markets (Phx, SEA, Den, Sac), and 9 top 30 markets (Port, SD, SLC) in their footprint. Adding access to DFW adds another top 10. They miss out on the Eastern and Central timezone views because of late games which impacts their viewership.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Re: Realignment Update
West Coast population is 25% of the US population, the same as the Central and just behind the East. The issue is TV wants a late night option and the West Coast (PAC12) is the only logical offering. The teams in the PAC12 would probably prefer to play at 5 to 7 Pacific rather than at 7:30, however the networks are pushing the later kickoff. The new media deal will be interesting in how the priority ranking for the late kickoff is handled.

Kansas and WVU are flagships but all flagships are not equal by any means.

Re: Realignment Update
time zone population % battle - here is my garbage data to match yours. Rest assured that while most people live on the East & Central time zones, the Pacific has a lot of people. The issue is that media companies want the late night games, thus there is a demand for the time slot that only the PAC 12 can supply.

i would add that the pacific time zone - beyond having a fourth of the country - probably has well more than a fourth of the high earning demographic - which definitely matters to the advertisers on whatever service/cable you use.

In your youtube screenshot, that is the guy's guess. Literally 15seconds later he says the actual answer is:
Pacific: 16.6%
Mountain: 6.7%
Central: 29.1%
Eastern: 47.6%

Re: Realignment Update
Exactly. With smu in the mix the pac almost doubles viewing opportunities.
It makes dollars and sense to try to gain market share in Central time zone. Any mountain t.z. is just gravy.

Re: Realignment Update
Does media day matter at all? Every time there's a meeting of any sort, "insiders" act like that's when realignment will be announced. It's kinda ridiculous.

If California was itΓÇÖs own country it would be the 5th largest in terms of GDP, behind only the US, China, Germany & Japan
Texas would be 9th, behind above countries plus UK, France, India, Italy & Brazil
