1) Removing Tubbs from the program when it became apparent that he had broken NCAA rules. Instead of waiting for the NCAA report and ruining next season, he made the astute move of getting rid of Tubbs. This move shows Orsini's integrity.

2) Interviews the best possible candidates. Orsini did not listen to the haters who claimed that no one would take the job. Doherty, Evans, and Terry are all immediate upgrades.

As you all know, we still need changes to the model to match Orsini's ambition. Nonetheless, with these initial moves, we may begin winning. After we begin to win and build attendance, we may be able to do some facility upgrades!!

President Turner this Bud is for you!! Awesome Hire on Orsini!!!

I should add that Doherty is an inspired hire. Not only has he recruited all americans, but he has also been named coach of the year.

to be fair, I think it was Copeland who fired Tubbs and Doherty recruited all americans at UNC. Not quite the same challenge as recruiting to SMU. Of course, the challenge at UNC was to win National Championships. The challenge in CUSA will be to compete with Memphis

C'mon, you don't think the phone call was made? Orsini obviously made the call to fire Tubbs. After Orsini got the job, Copeland did not have the power to fire a coach without his input.

"If Orsini is his own man, which I hope he is, he'll do a big splash hire (a la O'Leary), in this case Doherty; if not, Turner will force feed his buddy Evans down Orsini's throat. (Evans may be ok, but let's face it, that hire would be a yawner.)"

AND THE ANSWER IS: STEVE IS THE MAN!!! (Be afraid Phil B, be very afraid.)

We will see McClown-quite frankly I didn't see Doherty recruit anybody who might be confused as an All-American at Florida Atlantic-in fact I didn't see him recruit a single player that appeared to be highly recruited. And I'm not just blowing wind here-seriously out of 11-12 players signed over the last 2 years only one was even rated by Rivals and he was rated a one star and the only recruiting battles which he apparently won were over New Orleans and Florida A&M. I got a feeling that Evans/Benford would be the better choice if you want to get the higher recruited players to play at a school in Dallas, Texas. They've already proven they can recruit Texas including All-American Ike Diougu, NBA player Charles Smith and Clayton Shields both while Benford was at New Mexico and and Top Dallas recruit George Odufawa this year. The job of mending the DFW recruiting ties would have been easier with Evans/Benford too-and I don't need some 12 year old who has never followed SMU recruiting to tell me that Tubbs didn't get anyone from Dallas anyway. All of the best players for the last 10 years have been from Dallas and Tubbs recruited them. He also got his foot in the door with an incredible percentage of the Top Dallas recruits each of the last two years. They liked him-the coaches liked him and he had many fans throughout Dallas. This breach is significant to SMU basketball.

I would have been happy with Evans as well. I do like the Doherty hire. I especially like Orsini's aggresiveness. I really think we will see changes to the model. I also think Doherty may get in some people that would normally be headed to the Big 12. For CUSA, this is a great hire.

Come on now Stallion, don't be raining on the sunshiners parade. You just don't understand that we don't need the DISD, screw them, and with Tubbs (the worst coach in history) out of the way this program is headed for greatness. Thank God for grandpa Max and little Matt. I have become a believer and fully expect us to challenge Memphis for the title next year. The DMN is going to be fawning on us with daily front page stories, not to mention all the attention we will be getting from ESPN.

We will be on probation next year. In other posts, you don't seem to understand the concept, so I will not elaborate the fact again. Tubbs cheating has definitely hurt the program.

If anything, this hire will help attendance next year. I know y'all don't think it matters, but it does if you want new facilities.

Call me MM1965 all you want. I am excited about this hire, and I think a lot of other folks are too.

McClown, it really doesn't matter what your thoughts are, they are going to go forward with improving facilities regardless of attendance. Attendance will certainly help but the plan is already in place. Get over the McClown model.

IF Tubbs cheated, then yes he will have hurt this program and I will say good riddance. You don't seem to understand that SMU has'nt said jack sh*t, so why do you proclaim that we will be on probation next year and that Tubbs cheated. You are also forgetting that Gramps is the guy who started the whole NCAA problem with his famous burger set up.[/b]

I sincerely hope Dougherty if he is hired, turns out to be the next Coach K, but you need to get real. We supposedly just hired a coach from FIU or FAU that to my knowldge has'nt been considered by one other school this year for the myriad of openings. I certainly think we could do worse, but reality says this is still a crap shoot.

I do follow college sports, and it is clear that you do not. I am still laughing about your thoughts on the sanctions.
