Your problem is evidently you do not comprehend that more than one thing can be done at a time. The answer to many of our problems is "all of the above", not one or the other.

Why build a luxury high-rise in the middle of a ghetto? Before building it, one should invest in the local area. That is why you make the academic changes first. Otherwise, hypothetical "Dedman" Basketball arena will be empty--just like Ford.

Your analogy has merit, except for the fact that SMU is anything but a "ghetto," even in the figurative sense. It's a great school, with a beautiful campus and an endless list of assets to offer. Upgrading Moody and building the practice facility only will serve to bring the basketball program up to par with the rest of the university.
(The official Water Pony natatorium will have the same effect for the swimming programs!)

You need stop right there. This is getting ridiculous. Ford (and the boulevard) has been the best thing to happen to SMU football in years. Did you attend games at the Cotton Bowl or Ownby?? If we did not build Ford, D1 football might not be played at SMU today. Ford Stadium was an absolute necessity to keep this program going.

Now as for Moody, I happen to like the facility and have always stated that some work on the corridors, scoreboard and a general facelift would be all that I would like to see happen. The practice facility is a must and it will happen. Put in a first class practice facility and basketball offices and leave some of the charm in Moody and we will have nothing to complain about.

I went to games at the Cotton Bowl. I agree that Ford is an upgrade for gameday experience as a fan. However, when Ford was presented to everyone, it was supposed to bring enhanced recruiting and better attendance. The past couple of years, attendance has been the same as the Cotton Bowl. No matter what these people claim, we are also recruiting the same kind of athletes.

If you just want to build "Dedman" arena so that your gameday experience will be better, go right ahead. However, if you want to claim that the "Dedman" arena will lead to better recruiting and attendance, Ford proves that you are wrong. A new academic model is needed before another facility is built. These new facilities just allow some of the fans to be consumed with high expectations, and forget that we do not compete on a level playing field. A new basketball facility is not going to get that JC center signed, or the PG that will get us to the NCAA tournment. High level recruits like T.J. Ford, Brian Boddicker, or LaMarcus Aldridge are not going to come to SMU whether we play in Moody or a brand new arena like the AAC. In that sense, building an expensive new basketball arena on campus is like raising a high-rise luxury condominium in the ghetto. It may look nice, but no one is gonna move there.

MCClown - (starting to live up to your handle) - have ever heard of multi-tasking? We can do both - facilities and better admissions policies.

Its not gonna be your dough anyway - relax and enjoy the ride.

Thanks, Corso, for the endorsement for a new Natatorium. SMU deserves and will be rewarded, if we have first rate facilities in all sports, including renovating Moody, adding practice BB facilities, which could support Volleyball, upgrade Westcott, ensure that a Tennis Complex remains on campus and, drum roll please, build a new Aquatic Center/Natatorium.

The remaing non-revenue sports will rely on quality facilities like Ford Stadium, which adds immeasurably to the campus and the commitment to athletics. Swimming and Diving can not sustain it's performance with facilities that don't compare to an average High School pool (despite my nostalgia for Perkins). The same reason to continue investing in Westcott and bringing Moody up to standard.

For what it's worth, friends of SMU Swimming & Diving, understand the challenges and opportunities and want to help. Be nice to commit to Moody, Westcott and Perkins soon.

Go U, S-M-U

We have had almost 20 years to do both.
