Hey webbie:
I assume you are covering any hiring press conference. Please ask Copeland, Turner and Orsini if they intend to ban Max Williams as a booster for his role in Burgergate, since they obviously decided those were firing offenses for the coach.
OK, I'm confused, are we still on standard time? ![]() Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
We are always on CST. Maybe you are confused about daylight savings time?
Summary from UNC Board - somebody has some time on their hands.
SMU's President introduces Steve Orcini as the AD. He doesn't officially take over until July 1st. AD says the search committee put together a list of traits they were looking for in their men's basketball coach, and Coach Doherty met all of them. When he asked the search committee what they thought about the names being thrown around by the media for the position, the answer was quick and strong for Matt. Says Matt stands for and represents a lot of things. Their standard is to be a Top 25 Men's Basketball team in the nation. People, facilities, and resources are the things they will be focusing on. Matt represents all those things. Former National Coach of the Year... has coached at Notre Dame, North Carolina, and Florida Atlantic. Winner as a student-athlete as a National Champion, winner as a coach, and he's a winner as a person. He was their first choice. They had a pool of candidates to choose from. It says a lot about SMU and what their program stands for today and will continue to build it to even better than it is today. Matt is a "perfect fit". List of traits the committee and players gave them, Matt fit them all. He's a teacher. Said when he talked to Matt he could tell that he naturally and sincerely cared about his student-athletes. He'll be a great teacher and role model for their kids. Great recruiter... recruited most of the National Championship team that went on to win the National Championship under Roy Williams last year. He's a good fundraiser which is important to SMU athletes. Committed to excellent, taught that as a student-athlete and as an assistant coach at Kansas under Roy Williams. Introduces Matt Doherty as the new coach. First thing Matt did was joke to the players that if they want to play they better clap when they introduced him. Asked the players to move to where he could look them in the eye as a group when he addresses them. Met with the players just before the meeting and told them what he expects on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. Loved the way they made eye contact, shook his hand, and loves the way they look like they'll represent the university and the program. Said they were going to play hard, play smart, and play together. Then pointed to George Lynch who was in the crowd and asked him if he'd heard that before, then said George was a great player at North Carolina, played in the NBA for about 30 years, and was about 50 years old lol. The reporters and George got a good laugh out of that. George is there to talk to the team about building a program. Matt wants to build a program. There's a difference between a program and a team. A team is a one year deal, and a program is built for the long run. He wants to put systems in place for a program that everyone will be excited about. Said he can't wait to get started this week with the team. Thanks Steve Orcini (SMU AD) and Dr. Turner (SMU President) for bringing him there. Jerry Ford for his vision and the support he's given the university. Thanks his staff for the help they've given him. Says if Rex doesn't get the FAU job he will join them there. His wife and children couldn't join him, as his wife's taking care of her mother in Florida. One of the player's cell phone rings, Matt puts his right hand to his forhead, palm out, with all of the fingers out. Tells them that it's a five dollar fine if a phone goes off in team meetings and on the bus, and that's the signal for it. He laughs then says "systems in place". ![]() Thanks FAU and the players there. Says telling a group of kids that you won't be their coach next year is a difficult thing to do, but without them allowing him to coach last year he wouldn't be here today. Opens to questions... Q: Was it hard to leave Florida? Matt: It's always hard. Leaving Notre Dame was hard. Leaving Florida was hard. At first he didn't want to leave. A lot of work to do there yet, but this was an opportunity for him professionally and for his family that was a great fit. It had Matt Doherty all over it. Said he didn't want to take another job just to take another job. He looks at this as a destination point. You talk about Top 25 and Dallas. Says SMU may be the beautiful campus he's ever been on and that's saying a lot since he's been at Notre Dame, Davidson, North Carolina, and FAU. Says with the commitment they have there they can be a top 25 team. Q: What kind of committment did you want to see from the University toward the program. Matt: Says the time Dr. Turner spent with him was great. Showed committment the President of the University spends time with a prospective coach shows committment. The President played basketball in college so he knows athletics. The AD was the captain of the 1977 Notre Dame football team. Those guys know their athletics. Then said if the President begins to send plays down from the sidelines he's going to have to start calling him "Boss" like George Steinbrenner, which got a good laugh from everyone. Says he has no concerns. Facility-wise and academic-support are great. Q: Couldn't hear the question real well, but it was about recruiting. Matt: Says his recruiting philosophy has always been to start in your backyard and you build out. Says everyone knows about SMU so they can recruit nationally. Says they're going to start right there at their "home base", and it may be the most fertile ground he's ever been in. At UNC he recruited players like Brad Buckman, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Chris Bosh so he's spent time in Dallas and the Texas community. Says that when he first started out coaching at Davidson, they joked around that you couldn't sit on the lower levels at a basketball game in Texas, because it was basically tailbacks playing basketball. Talks about going to watch Chris Bosh play and how good the homegrown talent is in Texas. Q: Are you concerned at all about following Tubbs? Matt: Says there are always issues. Every place your in there are always issues. Going into North Carolina taking over after Bill Guthridge, and the previous staff didn't stay. At Notre Dame you had to come in after another coach. There's always going to be issues. The thing he likes is the people in Dallas care about SMU basketball. And this is a profession, just like most, that's all about relationships... building relationships. He says, I'll be a coach that will be out in the community shaking hands, spending time with coaches in the community. He's already called some of the coaches in the community, and he'll continue to call more. He can't expect everyone to love Matt Doherty, but he'll do his part to build bridges with the Dallas community. Q: Your coaching career ups and downs have been well-documented, are you different coach now than you were when you first started? Matt: Says he's definitely a different coach, and Dr. Turner and him have talked alot about experience. Says he didn't value experience much when he was younger. And he's only 44 right now. He didn't value experience, because he thought he knew it all. Thought he had a great background at North Carolina and knew basketball. He's learned through the years that basketball is 50% the science of coaching which is the x's and the o's and 50% is the art of coaching which is the relationships and the leadership. That's an area he's worked extremely hard in over the last 3 years at improving. Talks about the friend of his at the leadership institute that he met and she talked about a book that was on emotional leadership. Which is basically touching the hearts of those you lead, and he's tried to get better at that. Says leadership is a learned behavior. Says we all talk about people being a "born leader" and maybe obviously he wasn't a born leader, but when he read that he was fired up and really absorbed everything he could and is a lot better coach now than he was when he first started in 1999 as a head basketball coach. Matt said he loves the setting of their arena because it reminds him of Cameron Indoor. Says he was with Kryzooski on Saturday, and Kryzooski doesn't beat around the bush. First thing Kryzooski said to him was "So, you moving to Texas?". Matt said "Coach you aren't even going to ask about my wife and the kids?" And Kryzooski said "You know I only have so many years left and I don't beat around the bush." Apparently the point of that was to say that Kryzooski thinks Moody (the gym there) reminds him of Cameron too.
