Doherty and Bamba Fall

Postby DallasDiehard » Sun Apr 23, 2006 10:35 pm

I remember Doherty playing a little, but I basically remember him as "the other guy" on the team with Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Sam Perkins. Does anyone remember what kind of player he was? Any chance he was had an array of low-post moves he could teach to Bamba Fall?

He was rock solid, if unspectacular - perfect complementary player to that group - basically a 3 - Perkins and Worthy took care of the low post.

That's what I was thinking. He reminded me a lot of his predecessor at Chapel Hill (Mike O'Koren). Nothing fancy, but very solid. I assume he can teach low-post offense, and hopefully he'll be able to assemble a staff that includes someone with significant experience teaching low-post offense to big guys.

I thought Worthy was well before MJ's time at UNC.

He was a Senior on that '82 team when Jordan was a freshman.

Doherty was a glue player, very good at boxing out, passing, screening, help defense, etc. Having good size for a SF of the era, he posted up sometimes but was more of a jump shooter.

Doherty and Fall...

I am sure he can teach Fall a few things, and if he can't I will bet that he brings in someone who is a very good low post coach.

None of that will matter if Fall transfers as a result of the railroad job given the guy who bought him a burger and gave him some Cheer. Thanks Max!!

My hope is that the first thing Coach Doherty does when he gets here is to sit down with the entire team -- starting with Fall -- and lets them ask every question they have and vent their displeasure or share whatever happens to be on their minds. Part of the job for any new coach is essentially re-recruiting the young players already in place. Hopefully Coach Doherty's resume will appeal to the players and recruits alike.
