If Coach Patterson is half as good a coach as he was as a player, the LBs should be in for a huge year. TCU wasn't real good when he played, but he was a monster. Hopefully he can teach our boys to play the same way.

Sounds like an extremely smart coach. Not only did he coach defensive linemen and special teams in Canada, but the comments about his knowledge of what everyone on the defense was supposed to be doing when he was a player indicate that his understanding of what the coaches want from the defense runs deeper than just his guys playing LB.

This guy was all TCU had on defense at one time. And he played for a FA Dry screwball defense at that. So his college experience isn't too hot.

As to Canadian ball, D-line doesn't worry about the rush. It is a pass happy game. Traditional defense as one would see in the US are non-existent in Canada. So that experience isn't entirely germane to the US college game.

I would venture to say that a rough hard nose attitude is the norm for any linebacker coach. So attitude isn't anything one would not expect form a linebacker coach.

His real success will depend on how well our defensive scheme works. And how well he coaches the kids to play within that scheme.

FA Dry was the head coach at TCU from 1977-1982. He was the coach prior to Wacker.

He had a defensive scheme that was complex and largely ineffective. I think it was designed so that Dry's under talented kid could have a starting position. He played a mutant of the Penn State monster back but was more like a road lizard back.

Patterson was the "star" of this defense that has never been seen on a football field since Dry's departure.
