By my count, Tubbs gave us a shot at at least 10 DFW players in the Texas Top 20 in 2005 or 2006 and several other nice prospects who were highly recruited. Bennett can't even seem to get his foot in the door of ANY of the Top 100. Did he close the deal? No. Was it all his fault? Hell no. Has anyone ever given us a better shot of recruiting the Top DFW players? Most definitely not. The blame game on SMU Head Coaches is laughable. One gets off the Merry-Go-Round and another gets on-but the program never gets anywhere. The cause for that failure is SMU itself.
I think you make some good points here Stallion. The cause for failure is very much so in part on SMUs shoulders. One of the things I like about Doherty is he has enough pull to say, "You must do A,B,C,D for me to come in here and coach SMU." I am not an insider and am not certain of everything he demanded but maybe he is going to get some things changed for the betterment of our athletic department outside of the few issues we have heard.
I do not like your comparisons though. I thought you always demanded better? Saying noone has given us a better shot at local recruits or he has done better than Bennett are not reasons to rest and be satisfied. Maybe Doherty will be the guy to give us an even better shot at local recruits.

Look, buddy. I am the most intellectually honest MF'er on this board. I don not hesitate to post good news or bad news. I do not hesitate to discuss the pros and cons of any position that I take. I do not hesitate to present alternative arguments. I have always tried to present the whole story all the time; I am not one that subscribes to the view of "optional" completeness. There are people on this board that have admitted that is isn't their job to make other people's arguments for them; that ain't me, buddy.
whats with the 'buddy' stuff? You attacked me, so obviously, we ain't. And yes, you have most certainly opted for optional completeness. There are a ton of my posts at the time Tubbs was about to be hired that say it might take time for the results to show. Hell, I have said numerous times that it took several years for Tubbs to break through and get Sasser. I never once said that Tubbs would show up here and have his choice of recruits. In fact, I said quite the opposite and you know it because obviously you scoured my past posts selectively looking for ammo.
Hoop, you need to save your fingers and quit trying to post some sence into idiots. They are so happy "the worst coach ever" got railroaded by Gramps and little Matty they can't think straight. I'll tell you what we all should be happy about, is the fact that President Turner or Gerald Ford pushed Copeland into retirement. The "commitment" we have been hearing about for years was shown with the hiring of Steve Orsini, and it was shown again yesterday in the form of money commited to coaches and basketball facilities. Does anyone think Copeland could have hired Doherty. Does anyone think maybe Tubbs could have succeded with Orsini moving mountains for HIM. Tubbs was doomed from day one because of lack of leadership from his boss and his bosses lack of balls to put Gramps in his place.

I apologize. As Lyle Lovett sang, "I love everybody. Especially you."
He also san, "Give back my heart sh!tkicker redneck woman;l take your boots and walk out of my life." But I don't know how to make that work.

Duke only has limited NC players, because Carolina takes them all. Since they are a national program, they do not need to just recruit in NC.
SMU needs to recruit in Texas and especially Dallas.

You've stated it well. I really didn't want to disparage Copeland, but it is obvious that support was lacking in many areas and I don't just mean financial at all. It looks like a new day is dawning. Too bad Tubbs had to have his career ruined in the process and that SMU had to suffer long term consequences that will be hard to reverse locally. I'm not pouting about it, I'm mad about it and I dont apologize for it. What I want to know now is what Tubbs supposedly did, what Max Williams did and his punishment, and how SMU intends to reach out and mend fences. And I will continue to defend Tubbs against misinformed and malicious hindsight. Not because I am biased, I barely knew Tubbs, but because truth is truth.

Forgive me if I missed something, but what has Matt W done wrong? We all have read the stories about Max in the DMN, but as far as I know, Matt has done nothing other than carry the Williams name.

Well, you know, the sins of the father or in this case grandfather. Who do you suppose was feeding Gramps info?
