Interesting headline

Here's the headline on the Associated Press version of the story:

"Ex-Notre Dame coach Doherty takes over at SMU"

OK, so it says who got the job. My problem with it is the "Ex-Notre Dame" part. If they want to use his past to identify Coach Doherty, great. BUT HOW DOES THE FOCUS CENTER ON HIS NOTRE DAME TENURE INSTEAD OF SOMETHING UNC-RELATED?

Confusing.

Any national story with 'SMU' in it will confuse most folks.

Even better was the headline splashed across the top of the Daily Campus:

"SMU names Doherty as basketball"

Now, because there's some empty space on either end of the headline, I'm guessing they blew up the headline and it got a little too big, so it dropped the word "coach" at the end. But damn, it's funny.

"I'm Steve Orsini, and I'd like to announce that Matt Doherty is a basketball."

For the record: That was the managing editor's mistake, not Haake's, who wrote the story. This is why the DC can't retain editors longer than a semester.

Aren't headlines supposed to be capitalized?

Strange that, according to the DC, Doherty was called a basketball. Maybe it's not a good picture?

Editor's discretion.
Yup -- different publications have different styles. The DMN, for instance, doesn't capitalize except for the first word of a headline and proper names. One of the New York papers (I think it's the Wall Street Journal, but it might be the NYTimes) capitalizes EVERY letter.

PonyFans.com, for what it's worth, does not capitalize on our feature stories except for the first word and proper names.
