Mustangs Place 10 On Dave Campbell’s All-Texas Teams

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Football had 10 players named to the Dave Campbell's All-Texas Teams, the publication announced on Monday.

The Dave Campbell's Texas Football All-Texas College Teams include players from 12 of the 13 FBS programs in the Lone Star State. The lists, which include a first and second team on offense and defense, consists of 54 players – 28 offense and 26 on defense.

The 10 selections by the Mustangs were tied for the most with Texas.

Elijah Roberts highlighted the selection of Mustang players, earning the honors of Best Defensive Lineman from the publication after a breakout year in 2023. The agile edge rusher posted a career-high 10 sacks on a dominant SMU defensive line that finished tied for third in FBS in sacks with 47 last season.

On offense, SMU had three selected to the first team in Jaylan Knighton, RJ Maryland, and Justin Osborne, while Logan Parr and Preston Stone earned second-team honors.

Knighton is coming off a season in which led the Mustangs in rushing with 745 yards and seven touchdowns. Maryland, ranked as the best tight end in Texas by the publication for 2024, posted career bests in receptions (34), receiving yards (518) and touchdowns (7). Osborne and Parr helped power an offensive line unit that ranked in the top 20 in FBS in scoring offense (eighth), sacks allowed (13th) and total offense (16th).

Stone showcased his abilities all last year, throwing for career highs in yards (3,197) and touchdowns (28). His 90.9 passing grade last season by Pro Football Focus (PFF) led all American Athletic Conference (AAC) quarterbacks. He also ranked first in big-time throws (30) and fourth in passer rating (110.0).

Joining Roberts on the first team for defense was Jonathan McGill. Making the second team were Isaiah Nwokobia, Cale Sanders Jr. and Ahmad Walker. Nwokobia took his game to another level last year, finishing tied for the lead in interceptions in the AAC with four. He was also named MVP of the AAC Championship, first defensive player to win the award.

McGill and Sanders Jr. were part of an elite playmaking secondary that limited teams to 188.4 passing yards per game in 2023, best in the conference.

Walker provided a spark in the middle, recording 59 tackles on a defense that held teams to 17.4 points per game, 12th in the NCAA last year.
