Primer for SMU Tailgating for ACC Fans

Post by TexanMark »

So I'm a Cuse fan who likes to set up and run tailgates at away venues. My biggest tailgate will be at UNC this year. We have a block of 114 tickets. Tailgate is 120+ strong. I could have sold 250 tickets but I had to limit it. I have two smaller tailgates also at GTECH and FSU. Each about 40.

I do a guide rating our away tailgates every year at http://www.nunesmagician.com

https://www.nunesmagician.com/platform/ ... trip-guide

So anyways: brag on SMU

Interested in best prepaid parking for a single game

Best nearby restaurants (bar food through high end) I'm already salivating a double animal at In- N-Out.

Interesting things to do around Dallas.

Thanks

My suggestion would be to contact the Mustang Club and rent a spot, on campus. They have 10 to 20 food companies that are set up to cater. Plus, they can put together tents and tables ... The whole deal. Oh, it won't be cheap but less than driving your trailer to Texas and back.

SMU people are pretty darn nice. Just stay away from the frat area close to Dallas Hall. They sometimes are rude. Beer induced.

Walk the Boulevard and you might be invited in for a beverage and a meat snack. The campus is beautiful and full of trees and fountains and Georgian Revival red brick buildings.

Come to the corner of Bishop and Binkley and ask for BUS. A nickname.

Why are you "Texan" Mark?

Also, SMU campus is the safest campus you will ever visit. SMU is in University Park which is surrounded by Dallas. University Park and Highland Park, well just drive around and you will not be disappointed.

The scenery is amazing. Plus, lots of sterling silver serving dishes. Welcoming fans. IΓÇÖm on the east coast so IΓÇÖll be checking out the tailgate scenes in the ACC.

Our tailgate scene is awesome, and Bus has provided good information on it.

Prepaid parking - if you can get Binkley parking garage, that is the best. There are several hotels within walking distance of the campus/stadium and that will allow you to completely skip the parking issue.

Restaurants - California In-N-Out is much better than the Texas version - the fries at In-N-Out Texas are horrible. If you are looking for fast food, then you have to try Whataburger while you are here. More importantly, Dallas is famous for number and quality of restaurants, so a million options to choose from. From an SMU perspective, Campisi's, Bubbas and Snuffers are historic SMU standards.

Things to do - highly recommend a visit to the Bush Presidential Library on campus while you are here. Really an incredible museum, regardless of what you think of him politically. So many historic events occurred during his time in office that it is really something else.

Assuming you have a group willing to chip in, you absolutely need to follow the advice of looking into renting a single-game boulevard space. That's what the Duke Club of Dallas will be doing when the Devils visit. The Boulevard is modeled on the Grove at Ole Miss and is an easy walk into the stadium.

JasonB is certainly correct about SMU-related restaurants but I'd say Burger House is way more SMU than Whataburger (which is the Texas version of In-and-Out, originally from Corpus Christi).

Some tailgaters start to arrive at about 7 am for evening games - so it is definitely an all day affair of football watching. The early 11 am start times kind of limit the pre-game action to just a few hours. If we pull Syracuse for Homecoming game, there will definitely be live music on the boulevard. Sometimes there are live music setups on various days that are brought to you by the individual tailgate spot owners. Every year - Seems that everyone tries to outdo everyone else and it escalates every year. No telling what it will look like when ACC action starts. Only sure thing is that they will raise prices of the tailgate spots once we are in ACC action.

Here is 165 pages on Burgers: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1472

Olivellas Pizza is a staple. Shugs Bagels for the morning games. Bubbas is solid for breakfast or lunch too. East Hampton Sandwich Company is always a winner.

Lakewood Brewing has an SMU beer, Community Brewing, Peticolas Brewing, Deep Ellum Brewing, and Manhattan Project Beer are solid local beers.

Highly suggest you don't sit in one spot. This isn't parking lot tailgating. Walk the boulevard and enjoy the scene.

Brinkley Garage...can you tailgate on the top deck? Or just outside on grass?

I saw the parking map showed about 4 free lots across the freeway. Can you set up a tailgate there?

I definitely want to walk the Boulevard though.

I saw some pay lots available north of the stadium too.

Bump

Hopefully more tailgating info will come out

Many ACC teams definitely travel and probably 50% of the teams will likely try to set up visiting tailgates.

As you know private schools have alumni all over and you'll be surprised at the fans who show in Dallas. Notre Dame goes without saying but Cuse should travel well to SMU.

FSU, Clemson, VTech, NCSU and Louisville from the public schools will all rep solidly.

No idea on CalFord.

Burger House was OK when there were no good burgers in Dallas. It's better than fast food, but not much, and save yourself the disappointment: Whataburger is awful. For burgers: Snuffer's, Haystack, Liberty Burger, Hopdoddy, Brass Tap and Ozona are all near and all make burgers a million times better than Burger House or any fast food.

For pizza: Olivella's and Cane Rosso are fantastic. Campisi's is good.

There are really nice taco shops all around, many of which are well worth the trip.

Lots of good -- not great -- BBQ places, but times have changed: BBQ is getting pricey these days, so be prepared.

I canΓÇÖt believe no one has offered up Mi Cocina yet. Go to the highland park village location. 5 minutes from smu. Great food and margaritas. Limit yourself to 2 Ritas before the game unless you plan to pass out. Try the mambo taxi Rita!

I've tries to explain to people about the areas that surround SMU. But there are still old ACC people who have trouble grasping that the University of Miami is Coral Gables, not in even in a top neighborhood in Miami. Coral Gables is like Highland Park in many ways, just on the coast.
