Volleyball Receives Votes in AVCA/TARAFLEX Preseason Poll
DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team has received 76 votes in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Preseason Division I Women's Volleyball Poll, announced by the organization Monday.
The Mustangs, one of seven teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) to earn a spot on the poll or receive votes, finished the 2023 season receiving 46 votes in the final poll of the year.
SMU is slated to face nine teams this season who appear in the preseason poll in No. 2 Nebraska (Sept. 3), No. 4 Pittsburgh, No. 5 Stanford, No. 6 Louisville, No. 8 Purdue, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 14 Georgia Tech, No. 20 Florida State, No. 23 Baylor, as well as six teams that received votes in TCU, Houston, Hawaii, San Diego, Miami, and LMU. The Mustangs will host 10 of these 15 teams at Moody Coliseum this season.
SMU Volleyball enters their first season in the ACC after a historic year in 2023. In head coach Sam Erger's second season on the Hilltop, the Mustangs went 26-7 overall and 18-1 in the American, highlighted by winning the American Athletic Conference Championship, the program's first conference title since 2016.
The Mustangs swept Texas State in their first-round matchup of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 1 seed and eventual National Champion Texas in the second round. The 2023 squad had several marquee wins over the course of the year, including victories over Florida State, Auburn, Baylor, Pepperdine, and Texas State, all of which are ranked or received votes in the 2024 preseason poll.
The Mustangs open the season on August 30 at Hawaii in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic.
