Had they waited until after signing day, we'd might have had a few kids sign on the dotted line that might have helped the program, or none. I have been a Copeland defender for some time, but this was one of the worst timed firings in history. You can always decide after the fact whether you want to release a player from his LOI if you fire the coach, but if he never signs the LOI, he stays a free agent.

I would guess Morgan and Roberts were scared off because of the sanctions that might hit SMU. Other teams will use that line to scare off recruits.

Tubbs really hurt the program. He probably set it back 10 years. A friend of mine from A&M told me recently that their coaching staff was pissed Tubbs got fired, because with him at SMU they knew they could get any player they wanted in Dallas. With as little talent as Tubbs left him, poor Doherty will be lucky to go 10-20.

stop being an obvious jerk. You havent even seen Nyam yet, and Bamba alone is a better center prospect than we have had in a long time. Throw in Dez and Tubbs sure didnt recruit below SMU standards in his two short years. Get a clue about where SMU stands in the basketball world. Your the same clown who says we dont need facilities right? Uh, I guess Doherty disagrees with your expert assessment.

Sorry, just reporting what everyone else thought of Tubbs in the coaching ranks. I would be careful with expectations that high. Doherty will need several years to rebuild the program after the Tubbs recruiting disaster and violations. If he has a winning season next year, Doherty is the best coach we have ever had and we should build him whatever he wants--unlike Tubbs.

now all he has to do is have a winning season next year? Improve by a couple lousy games? You must really have thought alot of those Tubbs recruits Hopkins and Morris. Thats all we lose, and we will basically be a team full of upperclassmen next year too. You can't keep your stories straight McClown.

It is sad how y'all have turned to personal attacks. But, I have not changed stories at all. With Doherty's hire, I expect that recruiting will improve. Next year, the players will have to adjust to Doherty's philosophy and style. I think a step back is entirely possible with the loss of Hopkins. He was the team leader. I think we will be 10-20, if we win more Doherty is a genius.

Why don't you think the Hopkins loss is significant? I never said anything against Hopkins. I thought the coaching of Dement and Tubbs held back his development, but BHop will have a great career in Europe. You crack me up with everything you try to spin about other posters.

I think it is significant. Who recruited BHop? But alot of times teams benefit in some ways when a focal point like Hop leaves. Makes everybody else step up. Roberts and Willingham will be upperclassmen next year too. Bamba should improve greatly as a soph. Plus nearly the entire conference season this season was played under the distraction of the Max Williams led investigation. Unless Doherty upgrades the schedule a bunch, he damn better go .500 or better next year. You wont be here to defend it though, you'll change your username just as sure as Moody needs a facelift.

I think what Hoop Fan is saying is that your opinion is less than worthless because all you do is yap yap yap with leaps of logics without the slightest attempt to support your opinion with ANY FACTS. You think Tubbs set SMU back 10 years? You expect recruiting will improve? "You expect SMU will go 10-20? You're just telling us what everybody in the coaching profession thinks about Tubbs? You claim SMU's recruiting is so awful but have NEVER shown you know the slightest thing you are talking about. You are symptomatic of many posters on this board that don't have a lot to say but expect us to give a damn about your unsubstantiated opinions. I think that in theory this team should be worse than it was last season. It loses its only proven scorer in Hopkins and a pretty good post player in Morris. It will replace them with 2 or 3 new players. One of which is supposed to be a promising player (Nyam) but also considerd a bit of a project. The other 2 potential players will be leftovers from this years recruiting due to the less than ideal timing of the Tubbs firing/Doherty hiring.

Looking at it that way it really seems like we should be worse than our sub .500 record and 4-10 conf record last season. That however ignores the fact that we have a new coach who is pretty darn good on the Xs and Os end of things and seems like a pretty good motivator. He has a history of significant turnarounds in his first year coaching. A 13 win improvement combined from his first seasons at ND and FAU is a reason for hope in my opinion. Do I think that SMU will improve my 6 or 7 wins in his first season? No, I think that would be quite the reach. But I DO think we will improve and will continue to get a little better each season under Doherty. I expect us to be better than we were last year.

so, you dont think players and teams get better with experience? yes, Bhop is a loss. But he is one guy. Shouldn't Roberts, Dez, Bamba, Rack, Killen and Pearson all improve quite a bit? Even moreso if Doh is in fact a great coach.

They WILL improve under his coaching bc I think he will get more out of each player and the roster as a whole. But the fact of the matter is he is losing his best player and another starter and replacing them with noone who will be in the 7 to 8 man rotation at this point. His coaching and better utilization of the talent on our roster will be the difference in making a less talented team better than our team was last season. I think under Tubbs last year they underachieved and that the team would not improve this season from last.

If the talent is better, then the team will be better. Its stupid to say that this guy is a great Xs and Os guy, so the team will be better. His Xs & Os shouldn't really be that much different than any other Conf USA coach. Take it from a coach, great athletes and players will always make your Xs and Os better than the other guy's

The talent on the team will be UNDENIABLY worse, yet the record will be better than last season. Say what you will about that angry.

Oh please Stallion,

You and Hoop fan can harken back to the glory days of the Tubbs era, where we were supposedly in on every big recruit in Dallas. It just makes both of y'all sound like idiots. I know you think it is real cool to act contrarian all the time, but casual fans like yourself make me giggle. Go back to posting about how Charlie Waters or some other ex-Cowboy would resurrect our football program.

As for your expertise, show me something I cannot get by paying $8.95 off some website.

HoopFan, do you still think we should re-hire Tubbs?

Now we're getting into revisionism. The threat of NCAA sanctions ran players off from Tubbs? Tubbs set the program back 10 years? Let me say it more slowly this time. We won't know which players we would have gotten [ or not gotten] because they ran Tubbs off a week before the signing date which made it impossible to know who we might or might not have gotten.
