Anyone remember how beautiful it was last weekend at Ford?

Well, here's the forecast for the spring game conditions of our week 1 opponent:

"Saturday warm and windy, with gusts near 50 mph. Blowing dust likely, fire danger remains high."

Any recruits weighing SMU and TTech, compare and contrast. Such days are not anomalous out there.

my family is from lubcock. i mean, lubbock.

first time i go out there, the rental car we got had to be repainted because lubbock sandblasted it for us.

While Lubbock may not be Shangri-La, I don't believe that the weather will be the deciding factor between recruits.

Yeah, SMU, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas and Tech are continuing reminders that location is about 100th on the list of concerns for recruits.

you're probably right. And neither is water-how it tastes or what's in it. Or possible future expenses for cosmetic dentistry. Or having to drive outside of town to purchase libations (hello 'the strip' on Tahoka Highway).

I know it sounds weird to non-Tech folks, but going to the strip is just one more of the unique and fun things that make Tech such a tight-knit and great place to go to school. Your first trip to the strip when you see the lights of mini vegas is quite a sight, and it's always a cool "Tech" thing to do with your buddies and a list and all that... weird I know, but Tech and Lubbock is heaven for 90% of the people there, it just is.

The wind and sand occasionally does blow and it sucks, but we just kinda laugh about it and all kick back at the bar and relax.

UP and Lubbock are very different places, but folks' dedication and love for Texas Tech is not something to take lightly - it's a place that grows on you very quickly and becomes a wonderful place to be.... for folks who fit in there.

The fact that Lubbock is so isolated causes the place to be as binding as it does. No one leaves, everyone goes out all the time, everyone parties pre-football and post-football and there is never any worry about people "leaving town" on the weekends and stuff, that way a real college environment thrives and takes hold there.

It's strange to non-Tech folk, but I believe and most do that Lubbock is simply a wonderful and unique place to go to college - for some reason it's special in its own strange way... but not like aggy cultish.

I will say this...I've been recruited both by SMU and Tech for academics, and while SMU invited me up to campus and gave me a tour, then verbally said (but not in writing) that I would be a good candidate for at least a 1/2 tuition scholarship, Tech came to Corpus, invited me to a banquet to meet school representatives and alumni, gave me a listing of people to contact/visit whenever I'm in Lubbock, and IN WRITING offered me a scholarship which covers the costs of 4 years of undergrad, plus $4000 toward a year of grad school, and said I would probably get other scholarships on top of that. Currently, I'm a high school junior, so I've been doing college research and I have to say that what Tech is doing is helping to alleviate the cons of going to school in Lubbock (dirt, wind, nothing to do). And I've been to Lubbock and UP, and I must say that while UP is a terribly beautiful place (especially compared to Lubbock), Lubbock just has a different feeling. And that's not a bad thing.

Since my uncle played football at Tech, I have family ties to the institution. Not so with SMU. Plus, the Tech alumni promised "care packages" if I chose their school (remember, I'm not being recruited for athletics!).

My point of all this is...weather is probably not the deciding factor for football recruits. Coaching staff and facilities are. And right now, Tech has the upper hand over us in coaching (though I like Bennett and think he's got the team going in the right direction) and probably facilities (they have a practice bubble and their stadium will be completely renovated by 2010).
