The win was SMU's fourth clean sheet of the season and Martin Dominguez's second career shutout.
The Mustangs have won three consecutive matches, improving their record to 2-1 in the ACC and 5-1-2 overall.
How It Happened
In a back-and-forth battle from kickoff, SMU's most significant chance in the first half came from Jaylinn Mitchell's effort through the right wing in the 40th minute. After beating his defender, Mitchell aimed for the top right corner of the goal but the Hokies' goalkeeper, Cooper Wenzel, was able to deny it.
Virginia Tech outshot SMU three to seven through the first 45 minutes but the match remained scoreless.
The Mustangs seized the momentum as soon as the second half started and it did not take long for them to take the lead.
Lamar Bynum initiated the goal-scoring sequence by flicking the ball to give space for Chambron Pinho on the left wing. The left wing back swings a cross to assist Escorcia on his first goal for SMU.
The assist was Chambron Pinho's first of the season.
The visitors restarted the match quickly and immediately got a goal opportunity from a corner kick. The Hokies were able to get a header off the corner kick cross but Dominguez denied their effort with a diving save.
The Mustangs did not wait as they went straight on the offensive, earning a corner kick after the sequence. Chambron Pinho swings the corner kick towards Zarnick who jumped above the Hokies' defenders to score his first goal for the Mustangs.
Chambron Pinho made his second assist of the match to double the lead for the Mustangs in the 62nd minute.
The scoreline remained 2-0 until the final whistle and SMU won three points at Washburne Stadium.
