Great analysis as always. I cannot agree with this part enough. Keep the stadium full. It matters more than most people think.

Thoughts on the Duke game

Postby RunningStang » Sun Oct 27, 2024 2:42 pm

Thanks Jason! This game reminded me of the 1982 miracle Bobby Leach at Texas Tech that kept top 5 SMU undefeated. That team finished #2 after beating #6 Pitt headed by Dan Marino. https://youtu.be/WiF9KXnIcwE?si=YEFi9G7dyqXQIHQw

Thanks Jason.
Great info. We obviously really need some guys back next week. Hopefully we are fortunate on the injury side of things.

Thanks Jason!

Question folks, why did Rhett not pull Jennings for Stone? I'm not a world is ending type of guy in this scenario but if you have a player experiencing an off night(happens to all athletes if you play long enough) and have a very good backup why not at least give him a series after the 4th, 5th or 6th turnover? I've heard two theories from friends very close to the program and don't believe either of those theories are accurate. Thoughts? Thank you all as this has been driving me crazy since last night.

Grateful for a win

I asked a similar question in another thread. It seems logical, and there is successful precedent (Stone's TD pass) a few weeks back when Jennings went down for a play. I am curious if RL even considered making the switch. Stone was shown warming up, but maybe that was simply precautionary if Jennings could not return.

I am pretty sure Stone was warming because KJ was writhing in pain and the replay made it look like he was done for the season with a torn ACL. It look TERRIBLE. I was shocked to see him come back the next series.

He certainly proved he is committed to Jennings.... Ride or die at this point.

Great question with a simple answer.

The pocket wasn't clean. Jennings was having to scramble out of the pocket non-stop.

Stone would have taken a sack on just about every play.

Don't underestimate the Duke secondary. they had the outside WR locked up all night and they also picked two balls intended for the slot. It is not a defense you want to be forced to throw into, and at least Jennings gives another option in the running game for the defense to be worried about.

If the problem had been inaccurate passes or missed open receivers, it would make more sense even with the pressure issues. But that wasn't the challenge. Putting Stone into the mix wouldn't have fixed anything.

I record their games and sometimes rewatch them. I was so relieved... and yet I deleted the recording.
I never want to look at that game, in its entirety, ever again.

Lashlee knows his players better than I so I don't question his QB decisons based on one game.

Unfortunately, Jennings has had two INTs because of stupid decisions when he could have simple thrown it out of bound in two games. One lead to a score.

He had four fumbles this last game. One might blame a QB RB mishap. But three were from hits in the field of play beyond the LOS. One in the field of play, an alert lineman saved. One was fortunately recovered for a TD. The other almost cost us the game. And three were in the Red Zone.

There is no excuse for fumbling that many times. He has to learn ball integrity. If he was a RB, odds are he isn't in the game to fumble late and give the other team a chance to score.

I don't question Lashlee on his QB decision. That said, one wonders about Laslee's patience with lack of ball integrity.

I’ve hesitated to comment about Brashard Smith’s overtime 24-yard run because he deserves all the accolades he's received. However, it is important to mention the offensive line made a hole Brashard could have driven a car through. With his great speed, Brashard ran to the endzone virtually untouched. Yet, another big part of the game was the winning extra point kicked by arguably the best kicker to have put on an SMU uniform, Collin Rogers. Go Ponies!
