Everyone is having fun when SMU plays defense this season. That includes the players celebrating turnovers at Club Takeaway and the fans watching their team hold opponents under 22 points a game.

Everyone except defensive coordinator Scott Symons, that is.

ΓÇ£Calling plays on Saturdays is four hours of gut-wrenching hell,ΓÇ¥ Symons said.

ItΓÇÖs a responsibility that winds Symons up into a ball of nerves so tight he has to pull an all-nighter eating pizza on the couch watching SportsCenter after a game before he can rest. His players put so much effort all week into performing on Saturday night, and up in the booth, itΓÇÖs his job to ensure theyΓÇÖre placed in the best position to succeed so their efforts arenΓÇÖt in vain.

Agreed. He's a guy we really have to hope we can keep because schools with big budgets are very likely to come calling.

He had chances to leave last year. With the performance of this year's defense, those chances presumably will be more numerous and more lucrative.

Even worse: with the performance of the team overall, winning the AAC last year and then bursting into the national landscape this year, I fear that Coach Symons isn't the only one we'll have to worry about. Success draws interest from other programs.

I suspect SMU is going to pony up the cash to hang onto talented coaches moving forward. We have the coin and are committed to football and the ACC. I think SMU becomes a destination job quicker than you think. We're back!!!
