SMU projected #4 in playoff rankings
Bill Conley and a couple of other credible folks now have us slotted at #4

Re: SMU projected #4 in playoff rankings
That’s highly misleading as the top 4 seeds are the top 4 ranked conference champions. So it is indeed great those “experts” are saying we’ll win the ACC; but they’re not saying they’d have us ranked fourth if the conference championship itself didn’t put us that high. (There’s no guarantee the top 4 conference champions are from the P4, by the way; if SMU and Miami each drop another game before the championship—meaning nobody in the ACC has fewer than two losses overall—then Boise could win out and claim the 4 seed.Smumba2009 wrote:Bill Conley and a couple of other credible folks now have us slotted at #4

Misleading? It's the system we're operating within isn't it?Dukie wrote:That’s highly misleading as the top 4 seeds are the top 4 ranked conference champions. P.S. Boise... They are over rated across the board with one stat, Jeanty's rushing yards, that keeps them afloat. A solid rush defense and they'd lose game after game.

Isn’t it seeding versus ranking? We may have a worse rank but get a 4 seed as the ACC champ.Dukie wrote:That’s highly misleading as the top 4 seeds are the top 4 ranked conference champions. Misleading, yes; the thread title says we’re projected “#4;” I’m only telling you that zero of these people would rank SMU fourth right now. Seeding, sure—but it does not mean they think SMU is a top-four team in the way people think of rankings.Smumba2009 wrote:Misleading? Great point on seed vs rank. Well noted... Will adjust my click bait approach.

Re: SMU projected #4 in playoff rankings
I think the only way SMU gets into CFP is to win the next 4 games. At this point, I don't see any way the committee invites 2 ACC schools into the CFP. Miami beats SMU, SMU will be left out (plenty of 3-loss SEC and B10 teams that will get consideration over a 2-loss ACC).
Re: SMU projected #4 in playoff rankings
No worries at all, it’s just that, as mustang1992 points out, SMU is likely either ACC champion and #4, or outside looking in.Smumba2009 wrote:Great point on seed vs rank. Well noted... Will adjust my click bait approach.

Re: SMU projected #4 in playoff rankings
This is not correct. There are 4 bye positions that go to the top 4 ranked conference champions. Those 4 spots come from the P4 schools and the top ranked G5 conference champ. That means 4 places to be taken from 5 conferences. As an example, today the top 4 bye teams would be SEC/Big 10/Big 12/ and MWC with Boise being ranked 12 above our 13.Treadway21 wrote:Isn’t it seeding versus ranking? I am pretty sure that if we win out we will jump Boise, but it is not an automatic ACC spot.

You’re correct, Mark: 5 conference champions are in; but only the top-rated 4 are guaranteed the 1-4 seeds.mrydel wrote:This is not correct.
