EXTENDED! SMU And Lashlee Agree To Contract Extension
DALLAS (SMU) – Head Football Coach Rhett Lashlee and SMU have agreed to a contract extension, the school announced Friday.

Lashlee is in his third season as head coach on the Hilltop, where he has the Mustangs at 9-1, undefeated in conference play, ranked No. 13 in the CFP Rankings and on the cusp of an ACC Championship Game appearance in SMU's first year in the league. In 2023, he led SMU to its first conference title since 1984. The Mustangs are 18-2 in their last 20 games, and 17-1 in their last 18 regular-season contests.

"Lauren, Hudson, Thomas, Rowyn, Scarlet and I are all so excited to be Mustangs," said Lashlee. "We look forward to building upon our success and making our mark on college football's national stage. I want to thank President Turner and Rick Hart, as well as Bill Armstong and David Miller and all the Trustees and SMU leadership for their belief in and commitment to me and my family. We are thrilled to be here for the long haul. Pony Up!"

"Rhett was the clear choice when we conducted our head-coaching search in 2021, and everything he and his staff have accomplished only validates our decision," said Hart. "He has operated in alignment with our values and represents SMU with class and integrity. As we go through a time of significant change in college athletics and the college athletics model, Rhett has been an invaluable partner and leader. We're excited that Rhett, Lauren and his family will continue this journey with us and are looking forward to shaping champions and competing for championships for years to come."

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Good news... but...
We should all know that such deals don't mean much.
It sets a higher price. If the school can't match a counter offer , he'll leave.

I don't think he would leave JUST for more money. He's a smart guy -- it would have to be the right situation, because those SEC schools have a pretty quick hook. If his current trajectory at SMU continues, he'll have an equestrian statue on the boulevard in about 10 years. AND he gets to live in Highland Park.planoponyfan wrote:Good news... but...

Re: Lashlee agrees to contact extension
I would have to assume the contract was structured with a healthy buyout. After everything the David Millers and Bill Armstrongs of the world have invested in get us into the ACC, it seemed really unlikely they'd be willing to let the coach who has us at 9-1 and has exceeded everyone's expectations for Year 1 in the ACC walk out the door.
Now to soccermom's point: it's time to start locking down guys like Symons, Thibodeaux, Justice, Likens, etc.
