Mustang Band not allowed to play at Penn State?

Postby PonyTime » Fri Dec 20, 2024 11:09 am

Is this normal? See last point

So the SMU band has to travel 1,000 miles to the middle of nowhere and they are not allowed to play at all during the game?

Wow, it must be a Big 10 thing. That's pretty brutal. At least they play during halftime and will be ~100 strong, enthusiastic fans in the upper deck.

PSU also turned down having Peruna at the game. I assume we can still run the flags in the endzone after TDs.

Looks like these are the protocol/rules that each site is required to follow for the playoff games. They are mandated by the playoff committee much like the ncaa does for March Madness games. It differs from “normal” home games. I take it to mean the SMU band does the usual halftime performance (split between the 2 bands) but doesn’t perform on the field pregame. They can certainly play during the game like any other game.

As for the SMU mascot, there is very limited space between the field and the stands at the Beav. I’m not sure there’s room enough to keep an animal on the sidelines.

The NCAA is a ridiculous organization.

And frankly - the road team getting to have an intro video is great....but that is also ridiculous.

just let them have a normal home environment and let the damn band play...

I took that like PSU00 did, that they're not allowing to play on the field during pregame.

No way they would allow visiting fans to travel only to just sit there.

I would guess the field has changed since we played there in 1978. In 1978, there was plenty of room for a mascot included the Colorado one.

As to NCAA rules, well, we know how they are administered. Guess the NCAA would band Alabama's band from playing if the Tide was playing instead of SMU?

It has significantly changed since then. The whole stadium was literally raised with hydraulic jacks about 8 feet back then and a lower concrete bowl was constructed. That allowed the seats to extend to the field where there used to be a running track and lots of empty space behind 1 end zone for high jump etc. That area was also filled with seats.
