You knew this day was coming.
How long until a player walks into a coach's office DURING the season and demands a raise or threatens to walk away?
Coach: "We're hoping Johnny is ready to play Saturday, but we're waiting to hear back from his agent on our last offer."
Sigh...
I really shouldn't drink and type.

That is certainly coming. But these “I didn’t get paid what was promised” stories, here & UNLV FB, are damning. And the FSU players seem to have texts as proof of the promise. If Leonard Hamilton wrote “checks” that his, ahem, “business associates” couldn’t cash, then F$U should fire him.

Schools are going to have to make sure they maintain their reputation as keepers of NIL promises, or else it will become almost impossible to recruit.

Very true. Schools will be able to pay players, but only up to a designated salary cap. Beyond that, it's legal for collectives to pay players, so it's still the wild west out there.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but ultimately the ascendancy of ESPNDisneyNike, UIL, open transfer eligibility, and LasVegas Sports Betting will lead to the downfall of college athletics as we know it.

College sports is changing at a rapid pace but the NFL and NBA are in no hurry to subsidize "minor leagues" like exist in the baseball world so college athletics will continue to be football and basketball's minor leagues and college/university presidents are just fine with that.

College athletics as we know it has not existed for years. NIL has just accelerated the transition to highly paid minor league professionalism.
Speaking of which: every year, a number of basketball and baseball players skip college to go directly to minor league baseball and the G League for hoops. Considering what top college prospects are getting paid these days, are those days over? Will we see even the most marginal students now go to school to cash a big check for a year before going pro?

In fact given that there are so few NBA spots and European leagues pay much less, they might very well stay longer in college (if they go to classes) to get paid more than they would by going pro.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
