The Dallas Morning News is reporting that former Miami tackle Zion Nelson (6-5, 315) has signed with SMU.
The Sumter, S.C. native was a sixth-year senior last year at Miami. He began his career by taking over the starting left tackle position and starting 13 games as a true freshman in 2019. He had seven starts among 10 appearances the following season, and then started all 12 games in 2021, earning Honorable Mention All-ACC honors. He played in only one game in 2022 before suffering a knee injury that has kept him from playing since then. Once viewed as a potential high NFL draft pick, Nelson announced his medical retirement in July, but reportedly is healthy again and seeking a new start to revive his football career.
Nelson is the third transfer offensive lineman headed to SMU, along Josh Bates (Oklahoma) and Adddison Nichols (Arkansas).
He continues a Miami-to-SMU pipeline that has produced players like running backs Brashard Smith and Rooster Knighton, center Jakai Clark, defensive linemen Elijah Roberts, Jared Harrison-Hunte and Jahfari Harvey, receivers Key-Shawn Smith and Romello Brinson, among others.
