Assistant Coach

Postby 93Mustang » Thu May 04, 2006 10:20 am

Anyone have any inside information on who Doherty is looking at to be his top assistant. It's my understaning that Rex Walters, his right hand man at FAU, became the head coach. Does anyone know who has been approached about this position. I'm hopeful Doherty goes with a local guy, but I wouldn't be disappointed with someone like Walters either - that is, a former great college player from a high profile program who wants to get into coaching. Thomas Hill from Lancaster and Dook would be an interesting choice and would fit both categories.

If a local guy is the best qualified for whatever his job entails, that would be a good move. But, don't hire a "local" just to have a Dallas guy on the staff.

I'm not gonna count on a Carolina guy hiring a Duke guy.

Aren't there two openings on his staff?

If I were to guess, there would be a "local" guy and a "best available" guy.

I'm hearing Doherty is recruiting like a madman, and being very well-received. Can you imagine if he added MJ to his staff? (Let it be pointed out that there's not one person on the board who entertains this idea as being even remotely plausible.)

"Hello, is Player X home?"
"Yes, this is Player X."

"Hi, this is Michael Jordan."
(Long silence)

"Hello? This is Michael Jordan."
"Yeah, right. Who is this, really?"

"Michael Jordan. I'm one of Matt Doherty's assistant coaches, and I want to talk to you about playing for SMU."
"Uh huh. Right." (Click)
