Re: John Shumate
Sad. He did get us to the NCAA March Madness once. Condolences to the family.

Re: John Shumate
Sorry to hear this. He walked into tough situation post dp and won a SWC championship before recruiting restrictions and going to the WAC killed us. Beat Tom Penders and his Cougars for the title as I recall.

Mustangs beat the Longhorns and Tom Penders in the final game to take the SWC title led by Run TMG - Tim Mason, Mike Wilson and Gerald Lewis.

What an underappreciated trio that was. Thanks for bringing up those guys, ShorePony.ShorePony wrote:Mustangs beat the Longhorns and Tom Penders in the final game to take the SWC title led by Run TMG - Tim Mason, Mike Wilson and Gerald Lewis.
Was that the game when, in the post-game handshake line, Shumate smacked Penders' hand so hard it looked like Penders' arm might fall off? The look on TP's face was priceless. Still makes me laugh.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!

Re: John Shumate
My great friend and fraternity brother and I had superb seats for that 92-93 season. We sat straight across the floor from the SMU bench on the 2nd row, a prime spot. Wilson, Mason, Chad Allen, Carl Lewis...I went to Chicago for the NCAA Tournament with the Mustang Club...fun trip, unfortunately, we lost and I remember siting on the O'Hare runway for 4 hours - highlight of that was Forest Gregg walking around the plane chatting with everyone.
1992-93 was a great year for us, 5-6 football with wins over TCU, Houston (the revenge game), and Arkansas...20-8 hoops-SWC Champs...had a .656 all-sports winning percentage...it was one of the few full season highlights back in those struggle days.
Well Done, Coach Shumate - RIP.

Texas may have been SWC clincher, but Chad Allen put us in the dance with his shot vs. Rice. Otherwise, it would have been NIT for the ponies and Rice would have been dancing to a date with BYU as SWC champs.ShorePony wrote:Mustangs beat the Longhorns and Tom Penders in the final game to take the SWC title led by Run TMG - Tim Mason, Mike Wilson and Gerald Lewis.

Totally agree, that Rice game was the key. Still remember how electric Moody was on that night, something that did not happen very often back during that time. If I remember correctly, SMU was down 10 with about three minutes to go but came storming back to force overtime and then handled them pretty well then. Texas was not very good that year and SMU took care of business in their last game against the Horns to clinch at least a tie of the crown. Another key piece was that Rice then got upset by a really cruddy A&M team in their last game, giving SMU the title outright. This was very important in that SMU got upset by Baylor in the first round of the SWC tournament, was pretty nerve wracking to see if they would get an at large bid on Sunday. They squeaked in largely on the argument that they won the conference out right.PonyTime wrote:Texas may have been SWC clincher, but Chad Allen put us in the dance with his shot vs. Rice. Correct. Except it was TCU that handed us the L in the SWC tourney. We had no business losing that game.shadowman wrote:Totally agree, that Rice game was the key. Damn,
My memory is fading, had most of it right though! Thanks for the clarification, I remember being devastated by that opening round loss to TCU and was sure it would cost us a tourney birth.
Glad we got in, but hated that clunker that we put up against BYU in the opening round. Was such a frustrating game, we just couldn't get the ball in the basket on that day.
