Cutting our losses with TubbsModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Cutting our losses with TubbsThe bitterness displayed by some about Jimmy Tubbs' dismissal is an outrage.
Whether the contrarians want to believe it or not or only want to sustain their angst, the athletic department is turning a corner. Jimmy Tubbs was possibly one of the worst administrators of a Division I basketball program that you can find. He didn't go out and sell his program to the masses because he is not a good public speaker and that made our job tough to sell him. Your coach needs to be a salesman. See Mack Brown. See Matt Doherty, who will be successful here. The academic issues regarding this team are more troublesome. I've talked with a person at the DMN (not Calvin) who said we could face 3-4 players on academic suspension for the fall semester if something isn't salvaged by the close of the spring semester. If true, what does that say about the administration of this program? Look at our 2005-06 schedule. When we played on the ROAD at UL-Monroe, Texas State (I know about the situation with UT-Pan AM), that's embarrassing. These teams come to your building because they are "guarantee" games. And then look what happend at Monroe to start the season. Blame Tubbs and blame Jim Copeland for approving it. By the way, can anyone find a good win in 05-06? The best you can probably do is Rice twice and Central Florida. And our vaunted defense, didn't we allow 3 or 4 of the highest individual point totals in CUSA play this year. Also, the Paulus Ritter situation was handled poorly. If Tubbs was going to get rid of him, Ritter should have been off the campus and not hanging around talking to Phil Bennett. And if Tubbs truly had an in with the DISD coaches, he should have worked harder to try and get the borderline student-athletes in. How many times have we heard stories of coaches going to the admissions board to fight for a player and try to convince them to let the player in provided he takes advantage of the academic support network? Just because you have a so-called in, doesn't mean anything is guaranteed. All of these facets are unacceptable. Unless there is a protocol for firing a coach regardless of how long he has been at the helm, please provide the necessary information. Otherwise, there is nothing in this world that can be called a friendly firing. I've seen worse. And for those who demand that SMU release its findings for the NCAA violations, there are two ways to address this: 1) Add up all the small stuff -- lunches, laundry detergent, excessive practice hours and the academic issues that were report -- and the sum is greater than it needs to be. It also go back to the aforementioned material about running your program. Dottin the Is and crossing the Ts. 2) Since the University is a private institution, it can handle it in whatever way it wants. Plus, Tubbs has likely gone into hiding. One would think that if he says something, SMU can drop the hammer of recovering his settlement and illustrating how bad it was. Perhaps, they are sparing Tubbs the embarrassment of how bad it was and in time, let the NCAA release it. And I think all of us know if he had another season like the first two he was gone. Everything in this offseason suggestion 06-07 was going to look like 05-06. I graduated from this university in 1991 and want the best from it. Jimmy Tubbs was not it. Matt Doherty gives us that chance. Best regards.
Re: Cutting our losses with Tubbs
Regarding the ineligibility thing, there is a big hint about who in that paragraph........................Let's hope finals go extremely well........
Maybe I read through too quickly but who are you suggesting is the hinted one with academic problems Friar?
I honestly was clueless as to our team having academic issues. First I had heard of it was when Morris was mentioned as having them as part of his decision to leave SMU. If more have issues too, that is just unacceptable. We need to stay on top of this. I still cannot understand how in the heck Bhop didn't get 12 hours between the spring and summer to be eligible for the fall. What a joke.
winning sells your program over the long term, nothing else will. Dement was a good public speaker and good with alums too. What you have with Doherty is a rich mans Dement. I have nothing against Dement, but we've done this drill before have we not? Hire an east coast guy, have him come in and say all the right things in the way we like to hear them for a while, go fishing and golfing with alums and then the honeymoon ends.
By the way, most of your administrative indictments say more about Copeland and the athletic department than about Tubbs personally. Sure glad we have Doherty here now to tutor the boys. Ridiculous.
You forgot to address the bitterness about not cutting our losses with Maxie Williams as well. Here's a booster whose association goes back to pre-death penalty days, who admitted to commiting violations within the basketball program which was a stated basis for firing the coach, but against whom NO ACTION has been taken by SMU. Yeah, you definitely forgot to address something in your little diatribe about how all is well on the Hilltop, pal. Or should I call you Max?
Saying Doherty is a rich man's Dement is like claiming a Mercedes Benz is a rich man's Chevy. (No offense to Chevy owners. Have owned one and it is by far my favorite American car maker. Love GM products.) Its just an absolutely ridiculous comparison that holds no weight whatsoever.
You know what, jstang. You're just absolutely right. And we're just absolutely wrong. It's must feel good knowing that you always know better, and you're the smartest one in the room.
I could care less about Max Williams. I know what's been reported about him and his grandson and everything else. Unless you can produce tangible about this other than the garbage you've written, get off that horse. It's DEAD!!!
oh, great. Thats your opinion. And mine is that he will struggle as much as Tubbs for a few years and it is very uncertain whether he can come in and have any success in recruiting our backyard whatsoever. But by golly he looks good in a suit and has a good line of bs for the alums and counter girls at Lubys.
Tangible evidence?? He was freaking quoted in the Morning News saying he gave Tubbs the CASH to spend on the players!!! How about an admission as evidence, braniac? Or didn't the freaking class of '91 learn to read?
