oh, great. Thats your opinion. And mine is that he will struggle as much as Tubbs for a few years and it is very uncertain whether he can come in and have any success in recruiting our backyard whatsoever. But by golly he looks good in a suit and has a good line of bs for the alums and counter girls at Lubys.
Ya too bad he has no actual credentials right? I pray for the day SMU finally brings in a real coach. Not just a guy who looks good in a suit and has good lines of bs. I mean it sure would be nice if we could get a guy who was NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR, and had won at every head coaching stop he has been at which would include a couple big time programs. Wouldn't that be nice? Well, I guess I will just sit here and wait considering all we got was a guy who looks good in a suit to flirt with the waitresses at the cafeteria.

you're right, Dement had more proven experience in building mid to low major programs than Doherty has had by a longshot. In other words, programs most similar to SMU these days. Dement had taken Cornell and UNC-G to the big dance. Maybe Dement was the Mercedes that we (SMU) ran into the ground and Doherty is the Chevy. I sincerely hope not, but you have no friggin idea. You just like him cuz he says the right stuff and wore a UNC uniform 25 years ago.

I doubt that many people outside of NC and portions of the Northeast knew who Dement was. Doherty on the other hand is highly visible. That is a huge difference between the two. Does that translate to better recruiting or winning? Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. We'll have to wait and see but I'll say this. It sure beats the hell out of hiring some assistant who no one ever heard of.

You are right. It has nothing to do with his undeniable success as a head basketball coach. Or the fact that he has proven he is capable of quick turnarounds (ie 13 win improvement in his first season as head coach at ND and FAU from the previous season). Or the fact that he was good enough to be hired as head coach by argueabley the most highly regarded basketball school in the country (certainly top 5). Or that he was NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR. Allow me to let that sink in for a few moments before I repeat.......NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR! Yes, its all bc he played with MJ before my time. You are dead on.

I wonder who people in NC would choose between Doherty or Dement. I have no answer there but would be interesting to find out.

As I said, jstang, I could care less about Max Williams. You obviously seem captivated by him.
By the way, if you read, I said Max was a part of it. Look at the body of work of the violations and how they add up.
I'm proud to be part of the class of 1991.
You need to READ!!!

for about the 150th time, I have no problem with hiring Doherty. i like Doherty just fine. If you'll notice all of this debate today has been first stirred by negative references to Tubbs. Look in each of the threads and see which side jumped on the topic first. You can see who the real haters are and its not me about Doherty. Its those who are trying to bury Tubbs just as deep as they can bury him and act like hes the worst thing that ever happened to SMU. Totally absurd stuff. Love the first time poster who finally showed up to tell us what he thought of tubbs.

And you need to COMPREHEND!!! You never mentioned Max Williams anywhere in your initial post, and given that it was addressed to the "bitterness" about Tubbs being fired, it appears to lay the entirety of the violations at the feet of Tubbs. If you did not meant that, you should have WRITTEN IT DIFFERENTLY!!! Besides, you asked for tangible evidence and only when I gave it too you did you change your tune about Maxie.
And if you really couldn't care less about Max Williams, why are you so afraid to pin part of the responsibility for the violations on him? If Tubbs got fired for them, he should be banned, right?

This thread started with a trashing of Tubbs and got the reaction desired by the poster. I think most rational human beings would allow that we'll never know if Tubbs would have turned out good or bad because he was terminated so quickly. I think Doherty was the best coach available and we were lucky to get him. I think every Mustang fan hopes he brings our basketball program to glory.

too logical Jtstang. Some of these people can't handle basic logic. I wonder if anyone here took Ben Petty's classes about Ethics and Logic. Can't remember the exact course, but clearly must have been an elective.

Jstang, oh have mercy on me for not addressing Max by name in my entry. Fine, pin some of it on him. I'm not changing my tune about that. Was he a scumbag for what he did? Yes.
But Tubbs didn't have to take the money and use discresion on what is "an occasional meal". He also could have monitored the bb practices better, he also could have monitored the academic progress.
I guess I'm going to have spell it out for you.
The bottom line is this, it lays at Jimmy's feet and he pays a price for it.
Call it trashing of Jimmy, fine. I have nothing personal against Jimmy. I had problems with the way he ran his program.
I'm calling it like I see it. If you don't like it, tough darts, farmer.
You don't have to agree with me, just like I don't have to agree with you. You guys think I'm full of it. And I think you guys are full of it.
And that's where it lies.
Also, I just got logged on today.

You still have not taken a position on what SMU should do to Max Williams, FW farmer.

darnit, the dreaded too much practice time thing again. Watching game film on the bus? Jimmy needed to personally tutor the players on bus trips.
